    The Earth's atmosphere is composed of five main layers - the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere. The troposphere is the lowest layer that extends up to 14km, where nearly all weather occurs. Above this sits the stratosphere, where temperature increases with altitude and contains the important ozone layer. Next is the mesosphere where temperature decreases sharply, and above this is the thermosphere, the hottest part of the atmosphere reaching over 1000°C. The outermost layer is the exosphere, merging into empty space.

    about10,000km(6,200mi;33,000,000ft).Theexospheremergeswiththe
    emptinessofouterspace,wherethereisnoatmosphere.
    TheexosphereislocatedtoofaraboveEarthforanymeteorological
    phenomenatobepossible.However,theauroraborealisandaurora
    australissometimesoccurinthelowerpartoftheexosphere,wherethey
    overlapintothethermosphere.Theexospherecontainsmostofthe
    satellitesorbitingEarth.
