WHAT DOES HAZARD

MEAN?
Hazard means:
Any potential or actual
threat to the health or life
of people, machinery or
environment.
Electrical hazard safety
means:
Taking precautions to
identify and eliminate or
control electrical hazards.

WHY KNOW ABOUT

ELECTRICAL HAZARD?
Electricity is invisible this in
itself makes it DANGEROUS.
Failing to take the necessary
precautions can lead to injury or
death and fire or property
damage.
Electricity is everywhere at
home, office, street etc.
Everyone is exposed to
electrical hazards, not just
electricians.

WHAT ARE THE SAFETY

PRIORITIES?
Electrical hazards exist in almost
every workplace. Common causes of
electrocution are:
Making contact with overhead power
lines.
Undertaking maintenance on live
equipment.
Working with damaged electrical
equipment, such as poor insulated hand
tools, extension cords, plugs and
sockets.
Using equipment affected by rain or

EFFECT ON HUMAN BODY

Slight tingling sensation
Small shock

Usually fatal; ventricular fibrillation;

entry & exit wounds visible
Death almost certain; if survive will
have badly burnt organs and probably
require amputations

DO YOU WANT TO BE A
VICTIM?
You could be the victim if you:
Dont follow proper procedures around
electricity.
Use electrical equipment improperly.
Use faulty electrical equipment.
The types of injuries:
Burns

HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO

ELECTRICAL INCIDENTS?

If you come across a person receiving an

electric shock (emergency):
If possible, disconnect the electrical supply (switch
OFF).
Call the emergency
Assess the situation never put yourself at risk.
Take precautions to protect yourself and anyone
else in the vicinity.
Assess the injuries and move the casualty to
a safe area if required.
Apply first aid if trained.
Seek urgent medical attention.

WHO CAN ACCESS

SUBSTATIONS?

Only trained and authorised personnel may enter

the substation.
To work inside the substation you MUST have a work
permit, wear required PPE and NO lone works.
NO work with live equipment UNLESS its mandatory
and this work should be done by senior expert
personnel.

SHOULD YOU BE AWARE OF

OVERHEAD POWER LINES?

Do you know if there are overhead power lines on

your site?
Do you know where they are located and what is the
voltage rate?
Do you know what the safe work clearance is?
Strict regulations are laid down to cover any work
that may have to be performed close to overhead
power lines.

BEFORE START DIGGING..

Be aware of the potential hazard from buried
electrical cables for the following activities:
excavation
drilling
trenching
levelling
Digging
Dont commence excavation work near buried cables
unless you check the drawings and a hot work permit
has been issued.
Follow the precautionary measures that need to be
taken before starting.

WHAT ARE OTHER SAFETY

MEASURES?
Heed warning signs.
NO work on live equipment.
Using approved right equipment and
tools.
Studying the operation or manufacture
manual.
Taking care of extension leads or
cords.
Using residual current devices RCDs.
Using the proper fuses rating and
circuit breakers.

CAN YOU PROTECT YOURSELF

FROM ELECTRICITY?
Have appropriate training.
Dont wear metal objects such watches or rings.
Wear required PPE and special PPE when dealing
with MV or HV.
Totally isolate the power and make sure its OFF
by using trusted Multimeter.
Discharge any residual current.
Clean and dry leads and plugs before use.
Dont use damaged or potentially damaged devices.
Dont touch live parts

REGULAR SAFETY
INSPECTIONS
Are a part of YOUR job...
Electrical devices and hand tools
should be checked each time
before use for defects.
Electrical Devices should be
calibrated.
A checklist should be developed
and used prior to start the job.
