Agenda and Goal

caBIG Overview and Introduction to NBIA
NBIA Functionality
Resources and Next Steps

The goal of this demo is to introduce you to the

capabilities and benefits of a tool that is available
for adoption from caBIG. You can also adapt your
existing tool to become caBIG-compatible, or
set up your tool to interface with this one.

caBIG Overview

caBIG is an information network enabling all constituencies in the

cancer community researchers, clinicians, patients to share data
and knowledge to accelerate the discovery of new diagnostics and
therapeutics, and improve patient outcomes.

caBIG Vision
Adapt or Build tools for collecting, analyzing, integrating and
disseminating information associated with cancer research and
care
Connect the cancer research community through a shareable,
interoperable infrastructure
Deploy and extend standard rules and a common language to
more easily share information

NBIA Introduction
National Biomedical Imaging Archive (NBIA) is a searchable, national repository
supported by NCI CBIIT that integrates in vivo cancer images with clinical and
genomic data NBIA provides the cancer research community, industry, and
academia with public access to DICOM images, image markup, annotations, and
rich metadata.

Using NBIA:
Who and Why?

Target Users:
Researchers who use images as part of their research. This could
include, but is not limited to:

Radiologists
Nuclear Medicine Specialists
Radiation Oncologists
Clinical Trial Managers

Core Functions:
The current release of the NBIA allows end users (with the proper
security clearance) to:
Download imaging studies, series, or individual images after specifying
the type of images that are desired
Resume an interrupted download
Save a recurring query, as well as measurements made on selected
images

Features of the new NBIA v4.2

Access public data without an account

Direct external application access to NBIAs data basket

View image thumbnails or use Cine Mode from data basket

Visualize images using I-Response from data basket

Display study time in new format, Baseline + n month(s)

Upgraded Clinical Trial Processor (image electronic submission/deidentification tool) with faster submission performance

WG S142 baseline anonymization script

Added analytical operations in Grid service

Allows external cancer centers to install NBIA with their own logo

Improved upgrade process for external cancer centers

Features Under Development

Visualization tool for the deployment version of the NBIA

The I-Response visualization and annotation tool (seen in the
demo) is only available on the NCI instance of the NBIA.
The Imaging Workspace has set as one of its highest priorities
for the 2010 to provide a general purpose visualization tool.
This tool will also provide annotation capability in AIM (the
caBIG Annotation Imaging Markup Standard format for
annotation and markup).

Generation of Annotations
The NBIA team is in the process converting its largest
collection, the RIDER/LIDC annotations into AIM format.
The general purpose visualization tool (or workstation) will
support AIM and will be plug-in-able to the deployment and
NCI versions of the NBIA.

Getting Started:
A Glance at the Technology

Tool Platform: Web Application - Remote application with data

uploads / downloads through the web interface

Key Prerequisites: (Only for local installation)

1. System requirements: Minimal requirements include a Windows or
Linux operating system with sufficient hard drive capacity and 3GB of
RAM. A typical workstation from a hardware vendor will be minimally
sufficient.
2. IT Support: Skill sets needed: Database administrators with specific
experience in installing and supporting web based applications.

End User Readiness: Staff experienced in extracting images from

PACS machines, and the ability to package and submit them to the
field center.

Two Pathways: Adopt or Adapt

Interested organizations are not
required to adopt this tool to
connect with caBIG
There are other ways to share
data and use common data
elements and controlled
vocabularies by adapting
current or non-caBIG
applications

Adopting NBIA
Release Timeline and Future Plans
