Listening skills are the most important foundation
for any relationship, including working on a team
School teaches us to read, write, and speak, but
rarely focuses on the skill of listening
Our listening habits are not the result of training
but rater the result of the lack of it.
Most individuals are inefficient listeners

activity
Better to view listening an active
experience that requires attentive
engagement with the speaker
Good listening can be taught

What is active listening?


Its a communication skill that involves both the
speaker and the receiver.
In active listening, the receiver tries to understand
what feelings, thoughts, & beliefs are being
communicated and accepts it as the persons own.
It involves feedback and verification that the
receiver correctly understood the senders message.

Reasons to be a good listener_1


You spend half of your waking hours
LISTENING
Instructions and directions are often
given orally.
You must learn many things which
you do not THINK are interesting

The better you listen, the better your
GRADES!

Listening is learning
The better you listen, the more you learn, and
the less TIME you will have to spend studying.

In active listening you will:

listen for the content of the message,


listen for the feelings of the speaker,
listen without making judgment,
respond to the feelings of the speakers,
note the speakers cues, both verbal and nonverbal,
ask open-ended questions, and
reflect back to the speaker what you think you are
hearing.
