Introduction

Overview:
The project is about a residential building (villa) located in

Riyadh. The villa is consisting of two floors (ground and first

floor). It also has some rooms on the roof of the building.
The land area is 300 m2, the building area is 171 m2.
The area and the elevation of each floor are given below:

6

Objectives
7

The main objective of this project is to analyze and design an RC

building using hand calculation and software under the effect of dead
load and live load based on SBC301 (Loads and Forces Requirements),
SBC304 (Concrete Structures Requirements), SBC304C (Concrete
Structures Commentary) and SBC303 (Soil and Foundations
Requirements).
Designing the fundamental structural elements (beam, column, slab
and footing) by hand calculations.
Creating a 3-D model of the building studied by using ETABS.
Checking the results with the results of ETABS.
Calculating the bearing capacity of the soil that is necessary for footing
design.
Estimating the cost for the building using REVIT software.
Project planning using Microsoft project software.

Main design descriptions and Specifications

8

The design is carried out based on Saudi Building Codes (SBC

301, 303 and 304).

The building is constructed as in-situ cast reinforced concrete
structure.
All walls are made of masonry blocks.
fc = 25 MPa & fy = 420 MPa
Floor system is flat slab with beams:
This floor system is very economical because

the formwork is readily available, and less

reinforcement is needed. Also because there's only
a small span between each joist, the slab can be thinner.

Main design descriptions and specifications

9

Minimum cover:

The minimum cover to protect the reinforcement in concrete shall not be

less than required by Section 7.7 (SBC 304):

Load combination:

Consider only dead and live loads:

1.4 (DL) + 1.7 (LL)
(SBC 301-Eq. 2.3.2-2)

Summary of first semester

10

Load calculation:
The loads were calculated based on:
o Unit weight of concrete ( c )= 24 KN/m3
o Unit weight of wall ( b )= 16.5 KN/m3
o fc = 25 MPa. fy = 420 MPa.
o Live load = 2 KN/m2
o Total SDL for roof floor = 2.8 KN/m2
o Total SDL for first floor = 2.6 KN/m2
o Total SDL for ground floor = 2.6 KN/m2

Summary of first semester

11

o Load in Slab (First Floor) = 11.74 KN/m 2

o Load in Beam #1 (First Floor) = 30.04 KN/m
o Load in Beam #2 (First Floor) = 32.668 KN/m
o Load in Slab (Roof) = 12.024 KN/m2
o Load in Beam #1 (Roof) = 30.328 KN/m
o Load in Beam #2 (Roof) = 33 KN/m
o Load on Column = 321.6 KN

Cost estimation using REVIT software

45

Estimating the cost using this software by importing the

model from ETABS, analyzing the building to get the

amount and cost of concrete, steel, and formwork
required for the structural elements on each story. Then
determining the number of labor needed in the job and
the total cost of labors. Finally adding the cost for
material with the cost for worker to get the total cost of
the building.

Cost estimation using REVIT software

46

Cost assumptions:
o Concrete cost (material+ driver+ assistance) = 200 SR/m3.
o Steel cost = 2500 SR/ton. (By multiplying the weight into

the density of steel = 7.85 ton/m3).

o Formwork cost = 50 SR/m2.
o Formwork worker = 75 SR/day.
o Steel worker = 100 SR/day.

Cost estimation using REVIT software

47

Performance assumptions:

No. of carpenters = 12 workers.

No. of smiths = 8 workers.
o Productivity of carpenters = 3 workers finish 7.5 m 2/day.
12 workers finish 30 m2/day.
o Productivity of smiths (Slab) = 2 workers finish reinforcing 2 m 3/day of

concrete.
8 workers finish reinforcing 8 m3/day of concrete.
o Productivity of smiths (Footing, Column, Beam) = 4 workers finish

reinforcing 2 m3/day of concrete.

8 workers finish reinforcing 4 m3/day of concrete.
