Which large American city is on three islands?
New York City! New York is on Manhattan Island,
Long Island, and Staten Island. Most people think of
Manhattan when they think of New York City. This is
because Manhattan has the tall buildings that New
York is famous for. Sometimes people travel from
Staten Island to Manhattan by boat. However, most
people in New York do not use boats to go from one
part of the city to another. Large bridges connect
the islands. Trains and cars also use long tunnels

Writing The Paragraph Process

First we do a speed write

You have 5 minutes to write your ideas
and answers to some questions. For
example:
What is the name of your hometown?
What country is it located? What is your
hometown like? What is the
climate/weather like? Describe the
culture, the food, the people, etc.

Writing The Paragraph Process

When you do your speed write DONT

TRY TO MAKE A PARAGRAPH - just
write your ideas:

What is the name of your hometown? What country is it

located? Nevada City in America.

What is your hometown like? It looks like a town from the Wild
West, so it is very old. The architecture is unique to California.
There are two small towns. There are not a lot of people there,
so it is not crowded.
What is the climate/weather like? During the summer it is hot
and dry. During the winter is cool and rainy. It can snow
sometimes, too.
Describe the culture, the food, the people, etc. It is an easy
going city. People are nice and friendly. The culture is typical
for Americans. People like to relax on the weekend. Some of
the history is that the place is famous for being a mining town.
People use to mine for gold there. The food is good, with a lot
of fresh ingredients. On the weekend you can go to farmers
markets.

Wild West mining town gold

Climate and weather with hot and cold seasons

I want to turn these into ONE topic sentence that is

GENERAL and shows an OPINION with a MAIN IDEA
Topic sentence: My hometown is filled with many wonderful
treasures for you to discover.
The reader is thinking What
are those wonderful
treasures?

Your details will explain what

those wonderful treasures
are

Writing Example Outline
