Ajax Defined
Ajax is several technologies, each flourishing in
its own right, coming together in powerful new
ways. Ajax incorporates:
standards-based presentation using XHTML and CSS;
dynamic display and interaction using the Document Object
Model;
data interchange and manipulation using XML and XSLT;
asynchronous data retrieval using XMLHttpRequest;
and JavaScript binding everything together.

Ajax Advantages
Based on open standards
Can decrease bandwidth by only updating
content that needs to be updated
Allows sites to be more interactive, yet quicker
than static sites
Reduces connections to web servers (i.e. .css
file only needs to be requested once)

Ajax Disadvantages
May not register with browsers history engine,
making back button only semi-functional
Does not work well with search engine
optimization
Does not work if user has JavaScript disabled in
browser
Minimal support with mobile devices
