DALLAS BROOK
COMMUNITY SCHOOL

26-36 KING STREET, BROADMEADOWS, MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

DALLAS BROOKS COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL IS AN AMALGAMATION OF THREE LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS
IN DALLAS, BROADMEADOWS, IN THE NORTH OF MELBOURNE.

IT IS PART OF A NUMBER OF PUBLIC SCHOOL DEVELOPMENTS IN THE AREA

COLLECTIVELY REFERRED TO AS THE BROADMEADOWS REGENERATION PROJECT.

BROADMEADOWS HAS A PROUD WORKING CLASS HISTORY HOWEVER IN RECENT TIMES ITS STRONG
MANUFACTURING BASE HAS WANED.

BROADMEADOWS HAS ALSO BEEN A BENEFICIARY OF THE LATEST WAVE OF

IMMIGRANTS TO MELBOURNE AND RECENT IMMIGRANTS FROM TURKEY, IRAQ,
LEBANON AND SUDAN COMPOSE GREATER THAN 60 PER CENT OF THE
POPULATION.

DALLAS, IN CENTRAL BROADMEADOWS, IS SUBJECT TO THESE RECENT DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES. DALLAS TOO
ALSO HAS BEEN AWARDED THE DUBIOUS HONOUR OF MELBOURNE'S MOST FINANCIALLY UNDERPRIVILEGED
SUBURB.

walled city.

The different sized <

windows claim an
appealing look
towards the stripy
cladding.

ENTRANCE AND EAST FAADE

A STRIPY FACADE MODELLED ON A SKYLINE BOUNDS THE CIRCULAR CAMPUS OF THIS MELBOURNE PRIMARY SCHOOL.
THE SCHOOL ACTS AS A WALLED CITY, PROTECTING SMALL TAILORED COMMUNAL TEACHING SPACES LINKED WITH
OPEN COURTYARDS. THE WALLED CITY METAPHOR IS ONE THAT HAD RELEVANCE WITH MANY OF THE SUBURB'S NEW
ETHNIC GROUPS,

NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN FAADES

Broadmeadows, as the name <

suggests, lacks urbanism. For the
architects it was important that
this building provide some urban
density and that it gave the new
school presence and identity
within the suburb.

LANDSCAPE

The bold colour

scheme continues
throughout the
interiors, helping to
aid orientation around
the campus.

INTERIOR COLOURS

THE BUILDINGS THAT MAKE UP THE COMPLEX ARE DIVIDE UP INTO DIFFERENT AGE RANGES, CREATING
TEACHING FACILITIES FOR CHILDREN FROM KINDERGARTEN UP TO THE AGE OF 12. MANY SPACES ALSO DOUBLE
UP AS COMMUNITY FACILITIES, INCLUDING A PAIR OF SPORTS HALLS THAT CAN BE USED FOR LOCAL EVENTS.

CLASSROOMS

>The courtyard
consists of all
services such as fire
safety, drainage
manholes so that its
accessible from a
wider span.
>The central zone is
utilized for planting.

COURTYARD

The angular profile of the wall was derived from silhouetted imagery of the school's surroundings

WEST FAADE

The glass faade gives an inter connective link between the exterior and the interior so that the the common
goal of sportsmanship stands out.

SPORTS COMPLEXES

>A pedestrian circuit

defines a structured
inner landscape.
>Rationalised green
spaces accommodates
sporting facilities and
playground.
>Open green park

GROUND PLAN

The horizontally expanding horizon sets to stand as a wall for the city of education.
The ebullient array of colours drawn across add to the connectivity of the horizontal element of design.

SECTIONS

Brief :
McBride Charles Ryan was asked to
bring together three existing primary
schools in the Melbourne suburb of
Dallas, which is one of the city's most
deprived neighbourhoods. It is also
home to a multiracial community
with roots in Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon
and Sudan

Keen for the

complex to
provide a
community hub as
well as a school,
the architects
developed a
concept based on
walled cities a
typology that the
team felt would
resonate with
different cultural
groups.

THE DESIGN INCORPORATES SPACES FOR COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

>The wall is both functionally

protective and a civic gesture
an invitation to participate in
the shaping of Dallas' future.

CONSTRUCTION OF WALLS

Steel as well as
timber played hand
in hand role in the
formation of the roof.

FRAMEWORK FOR ROOF TRUSSES

Though cement blocks were

predominantly used, the red
bricks were used for the
foundation upto the plinthal
level.

The design amenities

of the school match
many dominant
features such as
pitched roofs, arched
windows, accent
ceramic tiles and
custom brick
masonry details.
The attention to
detail in designing
the space was
paramount to the
functionality of the
school to best serve
the students.

EXTERIOR VIEW

With a huge part of the

education dedicated to
visual senses, there
are few alternatives
that have guided the
paths of these tiny tots.
With learning aids, the
physically challenged
kids are able to widen
their horizons and
create an aura for
themselves.

TOKYO, JAPAN

TEIKYO UNIVERSITY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Most classrooms are arranged along the southern side of

the building, which is lined with glazing on all three floors.
A first-floor balcony also stretches across this elevation,
allowing a double-height recess below the eaves.

EXTERIOR VIEW

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma conceived this primary school

in north-west Tokyo as the modern equivalent of a traditional
Japanese schoolhouse with timber-clad walls

CLASSROOMS

The form is changed accordingly to the volume of each

classroom. As the result, it has grown to a building that
looks like 12 different-sectioned terraced houses being
arranged in a row.

CIRCULATION SPACES

>By changing its length and

height of eave, roof can create
multi-formity to respond to its
environment and different
programs.
> A big roof to run through the
entire building, differentiating
expressions on each side a
relaxed face toward south
where abundant green of Tama
hill expands and subtle
appearance to the north facing
public housing standing in lines.

ROOFS AND SHADES

AMBIENCE AS A HOUSE

The Teikyo University Elementary School comprises a row of

twelve connected classroom buildings that Kengo Kuma and
Associates also compares to a row of terraced houses.
