NON-VERBAL

COMMUNICATION
What is communication…….???

Communication in general is process of

sending and receiving messages that
enables humans to share knowledge,
attitudes, and skills.
Communication

VERBAL Non verbal

THE
BEGINING……………!!!!!!
The first scientific study of nonverbal
communication was Charles Darwin's
book The Expression of the Emotions in
Man and Animals (1872). He argued that
all mammals show emotion reliably in
their faces.
“The most important
thing in communication
is to hear what isn't
being said.”

Peter F. Drucker
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

• Nonverbal communication has been defined as

communication without words.

• It includes apparent behaviors such as facial expressions,

eyes, touching, and tone of voice, as well as messages
such as dress, posture and spatial distance between two
or more people.

• Nonverbal communication is learned shortly after birth

and practiced and refined throughout a persons lifetime.
WHY WE NEED NON VERBAL CUES……..?????

• Words have limitations.

• Nonverbal signal are powerful.

• Nonverbal message are likely to be more genuine:

because nonverbal behaviors cannot be controlled as
easily as spoken words.

• Nonverbal signals can express feelings inappropriate

to state.
AN EYE OPENER………!!!!!!!!

• Researches in communication suggest that many more

feelings and intentions are sent and received nonverbally than
verbally.

• Mehrabian and Wienerfollowing suggested that only 7% of

message is sent through words, with remaining 93% sent
nonverbal expressions (depending on author, verbal part goes
up to 35%).
WHAT DOES NON-VERBAL COMUNICATION
DEPENDS UPON……???

• Body movements

• Gestures and postures

• Facial expressions

• Eyes

• Touch

• Distance

• Vocal intonation
Body movements

•The most important and difficult to control

•It is estimated that there are over 200, 000

physical movements

• There are 23 distinct eyebrow movements,

each capable of stimulating a different
meaning……!!!!!

•Tells about speaks intentions and attitude

towards the others.

•Gives an insight into his confidence level.

•Have no meaning but support words.

GESTURES AND POSTURE

• Cognitively, gestures operate to clarify, contradict, or replace verbal

messages.

• Kinesics is study of body postures in non verbal counication.

• Gestures also serve an important function with regard to regulating the flow
of conversation.

• Postures as well as gestures are used to indicate attitudes, status, affective
moods, approval, deception, warmth, and other variables related to
classroom interaction
FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

• Facial appearance reveals information
about age, race, ethnic origin, and status.

• Next to words the human face is the

primary source of information for
determining an individuals internal
feelings.

• The facial expression for fear is an example
of an involuntary gesture - people
generally do not think of how to move
facial muscles when truly frightened.

• Facial expressions can also be voluntary, as

when an individual wants deliberately to
hide feelings for different reasons
These are various facial expressions
VARIOUS EXPRESSIONS
EYES

• Considered to be mirrors of our soul.

• Express speakers liking or disliking towards the

person.

• Another measure to check confidence level

• Researches show that people judge confidence level

on basis of eye movements as one who looks towards
audience is percieved to be more confident.
PROXEMICS
• The study of how people use and perceive the physical space around them.

• Influences the way the message is interpreted.

• The perception and use of space varies significantly across cultures and
different settings within cultures.

• Space in nonverbal communication may be divided into four main

categories: intimate, social, personal, and public space.(Scott Mclean,
1969) The distance between communicators will also depend on sex,
status, and social role.

• Proxemics was first developed by Edward T. Hall during the 1950s and 60s .
TOUCH
• The human skin has hundreds of thousands of submicroscopic nerve endings,
serving as tactual receptors and detecting pressure, temperature, texture, pain,
stroking, tickling.

• Haptics is study of touching as non verbal communication.

• Even a handshake tells much about an individuals character

• Parents transmit feelings to an infant physically, not verbally.

• In most human relationships, touching cab give encouragement, express

tenderness, and show emotional support

• One recent investigation (Kleinfeld) has shown that teachers employed such
behaviors as smiling, touching, and close body distance, small children tended to
learn significantly more.
VOCAL INTONATION AND CUES
•The proverb It is not what we say that counts, but how we say it reflect the meaning of vocal
intonation.

•Reveal emotional conditions. Difference in loudness, pitch, timbre, rate, inflection, rhythm, and
enunciation all relate to the expression of various emotions.

•Experimental findings suggest that active feelings, such as rage, are by high pitch, fast pace, and
blaring sound. The more passive feelings, such as despair, ate portrayed by low pitch, retarded
pace, and resonant sound.

•We are generally aware of some of the common uses of vocal cues. People indicate the ends of
declarative sentences by lowering voice pitch and the ends of questions by raising it.

•The vocal message can contradict the verbal one and, when done consciously, is considered an
indication of sarcasm.
SIX WAYS TO IMPROVE NON VERBAL
COMUNICATION
• Maintain proper eye contact.

• Use positive facial expressions.

• To avoid monotony use gestures like head nod hand movements.

• Maintain a good posture.

• Maintain proper distance.

• Keep on varying your tone and voice according to situation.

A Step forward
Can make a million follow
A Dream….
A thought…
Can light a million homes
A Touch can instill faith…
A smile can heal millions
Two can win a war
SOMETIMES ACTION SPEAKS
LOUDER THAN WORDS
SOME ACTIONS DONT NEED
ANY WORDS
NOT EVERY ONE UNDERSTANDS
OUR LANGUAGE
Some voices can dissolve boundaries
A RAISED CANDLE
IS A SYNONYM FOR PEACE
THIS WHAT OUR EXPRESSIONS
CAN DO……!!!!!!
