Black sugar came from China in 825.

At that time, sugar was so expensive more than now.


Only upper class people could get sugar.

In 8 century, We succeeded in making black sugar by ourselves in K


agoshima. The climate in kagoshima is mild and humid.
It is suitable for making sugar cane.

When the period of national isolation in Japanese history


finished in 1868, we imported white sugar from outside.
