AirCarbon

It is a polymer that is produced by capturing the

methane generated by a dairy farms waste lagoon and
transporting the gas to a bioreactor where the enzymes
combine the gas with air to form AirCarbon.

It was named Popular Sciences Innovation of the Year in

2014.

This started 11 years ago but the process was not cost
effective earlier.

Many products which have been manufactured using

AirCarbon includes Dell laptop casing, Sprint smartphone
cases and KI desk chairs.

Idea

The idea was that a lot of methane is produced by the farm

wastes and other industrial sources.

660 billion pounds of plastic is produced every year and the CO 2

emission is 3 times of the plastic by weight.

This causes a great damage to our environment as the methane

gas is 20 times more potent greenhouse gas than CO2.

The idea started with the question that why can't we use
greenhouse gas emissions as a resource to make materials?

Implementation

Earlier the biocatalyst used could only produce 1

kg of AirCarbon for 1 kg of biocatalyst.

Another biocatalyst was developed which could

generate 9 kg of AirCarbon per 1 kg of
biocatalyst.

Newlight Technologies patented the rights to

manufacture this thermoplastic.

The GHG-to-Plastic
Process
Capture:First, concentrated
methane emissions that would
otherwise become part of the
air, from places like farms,
landfills, and energy facilities,
are directed into conversion
reactor.

Isolate: Next, those carbon

emissions are combined with
air and biocatalyst, which pulls
oxygen out of air and carbon
and hydrogen out of methane.
Polymerize:Finally,
carbon, oxygen and hydrogen
are re-assembledto form a
long chain thermopolymer,
called AirCarbon.

Impact

AirCarbon is produced every year and is identical

to oil based plastic in performance but more
ecofriendly than plastic.

Many companies have started signing in to use

AirCarbon based products.

Most of the dailyuse products can be replaced

with AirCarbon products which can curb a lot of
CO2 emissions.

Impact

Newlight is now working with Fortune 500

partners and brand name market leaders
including Dell and The Body Shop to use
AirCarbon as a material to launch carbon-negative
products across a range of market segments,
including in automotive, electronics, construction,
apparel, and others.

Newlight has struck a deal with Vinmar

International Ltd to sell 19 billion pounds over 20
years of time period.
