 FACTORS AFFECTING
ACTION OF DRUG.
a. Weight. Heavy, burly clients require larger doses than weak,
emaciated
ones. The doses of many drugs are calculated on a weight basis;
a specified number of
grams or milligrams are administered per pound or kilogram of
body weight.
b. Age. As a rule, the very young and the very old require less
than the normal
adult dose. As you recall from lesson 1, several formulas are
available for estimating a
child's dose when the average adult dose is known.
c. Sex. Females usually require smaller doses than males. Iron
preparations
and other hematinics are exceptions to this rule because of the
blood lost by women

Preparation , strength and
dose.
 Availability:- tabs 6mg, then 3mg/kg q
6 hr. for 2 doses,
 Then 3mg/kg q 8 hr. maintenance dose.

 (up to 13 mg/kg or 900 mg/day)


DOSAGE AND ROUTE.

 Oral route

 Intra venous
ADVERSE EFFECTS.
 CNS: seizures, anxiety, headache, insomnia

 C.V.: arrhythmias, tachycardia, angina,


palpitations.

 G.I.: nausea. vomiting, anorexia, cramps,

 M.S.: tremors.
NURSING RESPONSIBILITY.
Nursing responsibility.
 Monitor vital signs.- temp ,BP (before giving the
drug).
 Check expiry date before administering.
 Electrolyte levels .
 Examine –mucous membrane ,hydration status.
 Evaluate mental status, muscle strength.
 Check weight.
 Important intake / output monitoring and
recording.
 Monitor pulmonary function test before and
periodically during therapy.
 C.V. patients should be monitored for chest
pain.
 Ensure oxygen therapy is properly instituted
during the attacks.
