Teacher: Good morning everyone, welcome to Geography 101, today were going to
look at how our world is divided up. Watch and listen carefully and then please
answer the questions in your textbooks.
Program Narrator: Approximately 70 % of the Earths surface is covered by water
and the other 30% is covered by land. This land has been divided into seven main
areas. Each area is called a continent. The seven continents of the world are Asia,
Africa, Antarctica, Australia, North America, South America and Europe. Within each
continent there are different countries.
Asia is the largest of the continents. Asia covers one third of the worlds total land
area. Africa is the second largest continent. It covers 22 % of the worlds land area.
The worlds largest desert, the Sahara, is in this continent and the longest river the
Nile. North America is around twice the size of Europe. It stretches from the Arctic
region to the Yucatan Peninsula. South America is the fourth largest continent of the
world, but it has less than 12% of the worlds population. The largest forest area in
the world is in South America.
Europe is the second smallest continent and has appoximately 11% of the worlds
population. Russia is the largest state in Europe and has the largest population.
Vatican city is the smallest state in Europe.
Australia is the smallest of the seven continents. The Great Barrier Reef, a World
Heritage Site, is in the Coral sea of the coast of north east Australia. It is the worlds
largest coral reef. Antarctica and the Artic are very different. They are both
extremely cold places covered in ice, but the Artic is mostly ocean and Antarctica is
a continent, a landmass. Antarctica is the coldest place on earth and no one lives
there but people live in areas of the Arctic region. The geographical South Pole is in
the Antarctic and the geographical North Pole is in the Arctic.

Reporter: Continuing with our look at major
developments in the 20th century, lets look
at cars. In 1997, the car company Toyota
designed the first hybrid car. It uses gas and
electricity so it is better for the planet.
Pollutions from cars that use gasoline is a big
problem so car manufacturers began to
develop cars that were better for the
environment but no expensive. Toyotas
hybrid car, the Prius, is very popular in Japan
and North America. Toyota was the first
company to develop a hybrid car but now
many other car company offer hybrids, too.
