and adjectives
OAdjectivesare words that describe

nouns.
OAdverbsare words that describe verbs.
OUnfortunately, its easy to confuse them!
OHeres an example witheasy
(adjective)andeasily (adverb):
- The English test was easy.
- I easily finished the English test in
45 minutes.

O A lot of adjectives and adverbs have
the same meaning for
example,easilymeans an action
done in aneasyway.
O However, there are exceptions lets
learn some of them!

Late /lately
O Latecan be an adjective or an adverb

that meansafter the correct time.


O Im not hungry because I had alate

lunch.(adjective)
O Heslept lateand missed his first class.
(adverb)
O Latelyis an adverb that means the

same asrecently.
O I havent studied a lotlately.Work has

been busy for the past couple weeks.

Hard/hardly
O Hardcan be an adjective or an adverb

and the adjective form has two meanings!


O Thisbookis toohardfor me. I cant read it.

(hard = adjective = difficult)


O Thismattressis toohard.I cant sleep.
(hard = adjective = opposite of soft)
O Shesworking hardto finish the project by
tomorrow. (hard = adverb = intensely)
O Hardly(has a completely different

meaning. It means almost not.


O We have a bad connection I canhardly

hearyou. (= I almost cant hear you)

most/most of/mostly

O Mostormost of(adjective) means the

majority, the greater part.


O Most peoplelike the countrys president. (=

more than 50% of the people)


O Most of the studentsin the class are nice. (=
more than 50% of the students)
O Mostly(adverb) means mainly, generally,

usually.
O Wemostly goto dance clubs, but sometimes

we go to a cafe.
(= we usually go to dance clubs)
O Ivemostly datedathletes; I love women who
play sports.
(= Ive mainly dated athletes)

Beside or Besides?
O Besideis a preposition of location. It

meansnext to:
O Theres a nightclubbesideour house, so its

often really noisy.


O I have a small tablebesidemy bed.
O The calculator isbesidethe notebook.

Besides
O Besidesmeansin additionorapart
