Network Concepts

What Kinds of Networks Exists?

Kinds of Network

HNC COMPUTING - Network Concepts

Aims
Understand the terms Client and Server
Discuss Peer to Peer Networks (Workgroup
based)
Discuss Client-Server Networks (Domain based)
Gain knowledge into the difference between
Workgroup based and Domain based
HNC COMPUTING - Network Concepts

Understand the terms Client and

Server
Client
This is a computer that uses resources on the
network.
A printer client for instance, is a computer that
uses a network printer.

HNC COMPUTING - Network Concepts

Understand the terms Client and

Server
Server
This is a computer or device with a computer
hidden inside, that has resources used by
other devices on the network
For example a file server is a computer that
stores files used by other computers

HNC COMPUTING - Network Concepts

Understand the terms Client and

Server

The server makes resources available to

the network, and a client uses the
resources.

Peer to Peer Networks

In a peer to peer network all computers
are equal.
All computers function as both the client
and the server.
Peer to peer networks can be set up so
that some computers only share their
resources and some computers only use
resources.
Each computer is administered individually

Client-Server Networks
Typically more expensive and difficult to
set compared with peer to peer networks.
Provide more sophisticated administration
and security.
All resources are managed centrally on
dedicated servers.
Require a network operating system like
Windows NT / Unix
Makes use of a domain to administer user
groups

based and Domain based
Peer to Peer

Client-Server

Size

Good for small networks

15 Workstations are under

Good for medium to large

network

Hardware

No dedicated file server is

needed

At least one server is

needed

OS

XP HOME, Professional on
all machines

NOS is required on the

server at OS on other
machines is limited

Training

Little training is needed

users administer their own
machine

Systems administrator
must be trained

Resource
Control

Each computers user has

control over resources

System administrator has

control over sharing

based)

based)
