Purpose of this document

GSC Technologies Corp. Is aware of how necessary it is to


provide its employees with a healthy and safe work
environment. We are convinced that a work environment such
as ours has many benefits for our personnel. Occupational
health & safety training course is offered to all new employees.
This manual complements the training due to the fact that it
can be given upon the persons arrival. The initial goal of this
document is to provide the basic notions of health and safety
while taking into consideration the context in which is can be
applied to our factory. Secondly, this document is a reminder of
the obligation that each employee has for their own health and
safety in addition to those of their colleagues. In the end, with
the bias of this document, GSC Technologies Corp. would like to
ensure that all current and future employees are introduced to
the correct practices of health and safety and their own
obligations.

1. Health and Safety laws


1.1 Obligations of the employer and its representativesIn accordance with article 51 of the act respecting
occupational health and safety ( AROHS,C.Q.L.R., Chapter S2.1), the employer must take the appropriate measures
necessary to protect the health and ensure the security and
integrity of the workers physique. It must notably:
Ensure that the facilities are equipped and organized in a
manner that ensures the protection of its workers.
Ensure that the work is organized , that the methods and
techniques used are conducted in a safe manner.
Use methods and techniques that aim to identify, control and
eliminate occupational risks.
Provide Safety material
Provide proper information to the workers pertaining to the
occupational risks and ensure that they receive the adequate
amount of training courses and supervision necessary.
Ensure that when the workers conduct task that they use the
proper means and equipment in order to protect themselves.

1.2. Employees obligations
In addition, based on the act respecting occupational health
and safety (CQLR), article 49 mentions that the employees
obligations are:
Educate themselves about the prevention program that is
applicable.
Take the necessary precautions in order to protect their
health, safety and physical integrity.
Be vigilant in order to not put the health, safety or the
physical integrity of others present in the workplace or within
its proximity.
Willingness to partake in health exams required for the
application of current laws and regulations.
Participate in the identification and elimination of accident
risks and diseases in the workplace.
Collaborate with the administration and all individuals in
charge of the application of the current laws and regulations.

2. Rules in regards to personal protection


2.1. Facial protection
Protective Eyewear
It is recommended that protective eyewear should be worn
during all manipulation or operation where a risk for the eyes
or any other such as: the manipulation of dangerous products,
operation of machinery like crushers and chainsaws, the
manipulation resin or any other dye in addition to any other
task that contains risk.
Security glasses are available to all employees and visitors.
Each person can get a hold of a pair by communicating with
the person responsible. It is highly recommended that all
visitors and subcontractors wear the protective glasses when
they find themselves within the factory. The people responsible
for the factory have the responsibility of having enough
protective eyewear to fulfill all demands.
When manipulating products that are volatile or irritant for the
eyes, wearing goggles or any other type of glasses that are
sealed from all sides is highly recommended.
The hair
Long hair must be tied in a safe manner. The wearing of a
headscarf or a scarf is prohibited while working with machines,
setting up mobiles pieces and during maintenance and repair
operations. Outside of these restrictions, if they are worn on
the neck or head, they must be worn in a manner in which they
cannot get struck. The excess fabric must also be tied in a
similiar manner.

2.2. Bodily protection
Protecting the hands
Wearing gloves is recommended during the manipulation of
material that pose a risk to the hands. It is particularly
recommended when manipulating dangerous products, sharp
objects, substances or equipment that have been subjected to
high temperatures.
Gloves are available to all employees and visitors. Each person
can get a hold of a pair by communicating with the person
responsible. The people responsible for the factory have the
responsibility of having enough gloves to fulfill all demands.
Protecting the legs
All employees working in the factory must wear long pants.
Pants such as Bermuda, Capri and skirts are prohibited.
Protecting the feet
GSC Technologies Corp. demands that closed toe and steal toe
shoes with flat soles be worn.

2.3. Respiratory system protection
Protective masks
In order to protect oneself against vapors and noxious
particles, it is highly recommended that a mask be worn when
manipulating toxic products or volatiles which are susceptible
to causing harm to the respiratory system.
Masks are available to all employees and visitors. Each person
can get a hold of a pair by communicating with the person
responsible. The people responsible for the factory have the
responsibility of having enough masks to fulfill all demands.
2.4 Auditory protection
Auditory protective earplugs
To avoid short or long term auditory damage, it is highly
recommended that earplugs be worn at all times within the
factory.
Earplugs are available to all employees and visitors. Each
person can get a hold of a pair by communicating with the
person responsible. The people responsible for the factory
have the responsibility of having enough earplugs to fulfill all
demands.

3. General rules
3.1. Limitations
The following rules are not limited. At all times the people
responsible can restraint or put an end to certain tests or work
if they judge that they are not safe.
3.2. Accessibility to the factory
Accessibility to the factory is restricted, all visitors must be
accompanied by a personnel member and must comply with
the security instructions in place .
3.3. Training
All new employees must follow a occupation health and safety
training course within the four months after their arrival. It is
the responsibility of the person in charge to ensure that the
new arrivals have a firm grasp of the safety rules and
emergency procedures before manipulating any equipment. It
is equally important to ensure that they know all the
commands of a piece of equipment, especially the start and
stop procedures before starting the machine. If need be, seek
advice from someone with experience.
The person responsible write, keep up-to date and make easily
accessible a procedure of operation and maintenance of the
equipment used in the factory.

3.4 Safe work practices
It is the responsibility of each employee to conduct each task
within their job function in a safe manner. The person
supervising must also watch the employees in order to remind
them of the proper work habits and that theyre being
respected at all times.
Knife usage
The knife is proven to be a dangerous work tool and must be
used in a way that minimizes the risk of personal injury and
those of their colleagues. Within possible measure, the action
of using a knife must always be conducted towards the front
and never towards oneself. No work colleague should be in the
way of the knife during its use. It is recommended to use a
sharp knife and to dispose of the knife and its blades in a safe
manner.
Forklift usage
The aisles must be clear of all obstacles at all times. The
forklift conductor must announce his intentions by sounding
his horn before each turn, reverse maneuver and when
colleagues are within its movement zone.

Movement within the factory
All people, employees and visitors that are walking through
the factory must do so on the side of the aisles in order to
allow the forklifts to pass through the center.
Maintenance of the machinery
Only mechanics who have received training are allowed to
conduct repairs. All machines requiring maintenance or repair
must be put temporarily out of service and the personnel must
be informed that a repair operation is underway on said
machine.
Manipulating heavy loads
All employees can be requested to lift heavy or moderately
heavy loads as part of their functions. It is important that each
person respect their physical capacities and ask for a
colleagues help or request a forklift in the event that the load
is too heavy.
Drugs and alcohol
The employees must in no way be under the influence of drugs
or alcohol during their functions. All suspicious behaviour must
be reported to the supervisor responsible which must take the
applicable measures.

3.5 Assessing thermal and electrical risks
When installing new machinery, modifying existing
installations or work methods must be preceded by a risk
analysis. This analysis must include a thoughtful evaluation of
all the risks possible.
Electrical risks
The risks surrounding the use of electronic devices can present
a danger for health must be made clearly evident. In addition,
a particular attention must be brought to electric components,
more specifically wires, devices used to ensure that there are
no defects , that they do not hinder the task , the movement of
employees or the forklifts. All modifications or direct plug-ins
( other than an electrical plug) can only be conducted by
certified electrician.
Thermal risks
The risks related to operations that contain high temperature
usage must equally be known and the dangers that are
associated must be identified by the proper signage.

4. Emergency measures
4.1. Emergency material
Absorbent material
Small spills can be controlled with the use of absorbent
material that is available to the employees. To receive
absorbent material, one must make a demand to the person
responsible. Notify the person responsible of the laboratory in
the shortest delay for any major spill.
First aid kit
A first aid kit that is in accordance with the current rules must
be accessible at all times. Each employee must know where
the kit is located. The person responsible must keep an
inventory regularly and ensure that the contents are
replenished based upon the needs.
Extinguishers
It is essential that each person familiarise themselves with the
location of the fire extinguishers and their use. The space
surrounding a fire extinguisher must be clear at all times in
order to facilitate its access. Each operational extinguisher is
equipped with a sealed pin. To be able to remove the pin, it
must be turned in order to break the seal. A extinguisher that
has been partially empty should never be returned to its place.
All unwanted fires must be signaled immediately.

4.2 Emergency procedures
The following procedure demonstrates the key steps to follow
in the event of an emergency, be it medical, unwanted fire or
hazardous products. If the person witnessing the incident feels
comfortable intervening, they may intervene in order to reduce
the consequences as long as they are not exposing themselves
to additional risk. This person is encouraged to do so. In all
situations, it is important to ensure ones own personal security
Medical emergency
1. Signal 911 and notify the person responsible immediately.
2. Provide the following information:
- Your name
- The location of the incident
- The nature of the problem
3. Follow the instructions provided by the person on the phone
or the person responsible
4. Conduct first aid if possible.
5. Turn off all machines that my bring additional risks.

Fire, Smoke or odors indicating unwanted fire
1. Alert your colleagues and get everyone far from the danger
zone.
2. Signal 911 and notify the person responsible immediately.
3. Provide the following information:
- Your name
- The location of the incident
-The nature of the problem
4. Follow the instructions provided by the person on the phone
or the person responsible.
5. In the event of a minor fire, if you are capable, try to
extinguish the fire with an extinguisher.
6. If the fire cannot be controlled, leave the site and pull the
fire-alarm.
7. Evacuate the factory from the closest exit.
8. Go to the meeting point as identified in the evacuation plan.

In the event of an accident, of danger or all other question in


relation to your own security or those of your colleagues,
communicate with anyone aforementioned.

Annexe 1. Evacuation plan


In the event that the employees must evacuate the workplace due to
imminent danger, they must use the exit that is closest to them as
identified on the plan and make their way to the meeting point.
