WIRELESS

APPLICATION
PROTOCOL IN INDIA
KEY TERMS 
Wireless: Wireless is a term used to describe
telecommunications in which
electromagnetic waves (rather than
some form of wire) carry the signal
over part or all of the
communication path.
 Application: the action of putting something
into operation

 Protocols:
rules determining the format and
transmission of data
WHAT IS WAP?
 A set of protocols which
allow data exchange for
mobile cellular systems
 The current world standard
for the presentation and
delivery of wireless
information
 It is device independent
 It is network independent

A leading standard for information services on wireless terminals

like digital mobile phones.
CURRENT CONSTRAINTS OF

Wireless Interfaces: Mobile Devices:

 Less Bandwidth  Less CPU Power

 High Latency  Less Memory and Storage
 Less Stable Connections
 Less Predictable Availability  Restricted Power Consumption
 Diverse range of network  Small / Variable Sized
standards Displays
 Variable Input Types
(Keypad, Pen, etc,)
Why Use WAP ?
 Wireless networks and phones
– have specific needs and requirements not addressed by existing
Internet technologies.
 WAP enables any data transport
– TCP/IP, UDP/IP, GUTS (IS-135/6), SMS, or USSD.
 The WAP architecture
– has several modular entities which together form a fully compliant
Internet entity
– all WML content is accessed via HTTP 1.1 requests.
– The same application can be used via several systems

WAP supports several wireless systems

- GSM, IS-136, CDMA, PDC etc.

GENERAL IDEA OF WAP

 The Wireless Application Protocol -

defines a network architecture for content
delivery over wireless networks.

 WAP implements several new

networking protocols that perform functions
similar to the well-known Web protocols
HTTP, TCP, etc.

 WAP includes the concepts of browsers,

servers, URLs, and gateways.

 WAP browsers are intended to be

implemented on small mobile devices such
as cell phones, pagers, and PDAs.

 Instead of developing content in HTML

and JavaScript, WAP developers use WML
and WMLScript.
WHAT DOES WAP DO ?

 Get financial information

 Order and buy tickets
 Pay your bills
 Read the news
 Read and send e-mails
 Receive your voice mails
 Make stock queries.
