3. A WALK TO THE
PAST:
HOW THE MARKET EVOLVEDMukarmat khan, who was in-charge of the construction
of red fort, was asked by Shah Jahan to make a similar
covered market. Shah Jahan constructed the Meena
Bazaar at the entrance as it displayed the skills of
Mughal empire.
IMPORTANCEDuring 17th century, it was known as bazaar-imusaqqat which meant, market with a roof or chatta
bazaar. It showed Mughals kingdom flourishing
culture, wealth, and art. A luxury market for royal
family. It was a privilege for the royal family to shop
in this market as most of the things were available
exclusively in this market only.

LOCATIONMeena bazaar earlier was around the four sides of Jama

masjid and later was shifted below the eastern end of
Jama masjid as it was demolishing the beauty of Jama
masjid.

6. ISSUES:
This sprawling market is the main cause of the chaotic conditions
of the precinct. The stakeholders would need to be agreeable to
shift to another location within the Precinct.
The roofs of the Meena bazaar are an unsightly intrusion between
the views of Red fort from the Jama Masjid. Skylights project out of
the roof to provide light and ventilation to the shop below.
The sandstone-clad plinth walls are spoilt with graffiti and
commercial hoardings.
There is not enough provision for parking for shopkeepers or
visitors. There are no dedicated goods movement lanes or
loading/unloading areas.
Garbage dumps, water logging, two-wheeler parking,
movement of carts and rickshaws for goods and passengers is
commonplace, adding to congestion and confusion.
Unplanned and unregulated circulation.
Antisocial activities like smoking, drinking, and pissing on roads.
People sleeping on roads at night.

LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION:
Meena bazaar is the main commercial area of the
precinct. It was constructed in 1976 to accommodate
stalls displaced in the clearance drive undertaken in the
area a year earlier. Starting from the foreground of the
eastern entrance of the mosque, the Meena bazaar
extends right across the precinct, from Urdu bazaar on
the south to the parade ground on the north.
Nearly 600 shops and kiosks in the bazaar, including
those in the mid plinth in the east.
Kiosks have come up inside the courtyards of the bazaar,
choking it by blocking light and ventilation.
All shops have plastic-sheet canopies on the front,
erected at different heights. (goods spilling over).

There does not appear to be a comprehensive drainage network in the precinct. Through only some
parts of the area get waterlogged, it would be important to put a proper drainage and water
conservation plan in place.

CIVIC AMENITIES:
There is a marked lack of amenities like
public toilets and drinking water. Water
present they are inadequate and in a state of
disrepair. Dustbin are rare. The facilities for
Wuzu for worshippers going to Jama Masjid
are not sufficient.

BUILDING
AND
CONSTRUCTION
TYPOLOGIES:
The various buildings, walls, edges, railings
and gates are generally not sensitive to the
key structure, Jama Masjid and Red Fort. There
is a very large range of designs, no design
controls have been formulated.
