1. Dynamic and Transient Engine Testing Applications,

System requirements and modular structures

ROAD to RIG

Purpose
Road to Rig characteristics of driver
and vehicle are simulated close to
reality for engine installed in the test
stand with the help of dynamometer,
enabling reduction of product
development times
Dynamic Engine Calibration
verification of complex ECU algorithms
with respect to various operating
conditions
Emission Testing

System Requirement Modules and

Interfaces

Modularity : Test stand should have

modular structure with standardized
interfaces to enable adaptation to
new testing
4 major modules around the
specimen i.e. Engine are :
Dynamometer :3 types
Controller :control dynamometer, RLS
compatible
Measuring system : for exhaust and fuel
consumption
Automation system: runs the various

Vehicle model to road load

simulation(RLS)

Example of test stand

Calculation methodology
The controller must be complemented by RLS
software to enable transient testing
This is used to simulate all forces acting on the
vehicle and to reproduce them at the engine
interface ie flywheel
External forces on vehicle : drag, rolling
resistance, gradient, acceleration
These forces must be converted via wheel
diameter, differential, gearbox etc and related
to flywheel
Major parameters : mass, damping, stiffness,
gear ratios etc
These parameters are defined and transferred
into RLS software model

Laboratory), Univ. of Wisconsin
Approach a transient system for single
cylinder system that replicates dynamics of
a multi cylinder engine
Test system includes a dynamic model of
the entire multi-cylinder engine that runs in
real time
Model computes instantaneous torque
trajectory and dyno applies it to engine
