*Pollution
Any addition to air, water, soil, etc. that
threatens the health survival of humans or other
living organisms.

1.
2.

Natural- Volcanic Eruption

Anthropogenic- Burning Coal

Types of Sources

*Point Source Single, identifiable source

e.g. Smokestack, Drainage etc.

*Non-Point Source Disprsed source

e.g. Runoff from pesticides, fertilizers

What are the Key

Environmental Problems
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.

Population Growth
Resource use without preventing Pollution
and Reducing Waste
Degrading habitats and reduction of
biodiversity
Poverty
Failure of government to encourage
development

*Air Pollution
* Air Pollution results from human activities such
as burning fossil fuels (Oil, Coal and Gasoline)
to create electricity and power automobiles
and manufacture industrial products such as
chemicals and plastics.
* The air pollutants are particulates, HC, CO2,
CO, NO, NO2, SO3 Source may be industrial
autos.

*Cont.
* The increased chloroflouro-carbons in the

atmosphere has been depleting strathopheric

ozone.
* The increased carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere contributors to the warming of the
Global Climate the so-called Green House
Effect

*Sources of Air
Pollution

oMan Made:
Stationary Sources:
* Point Source: Smoke Stacks , 14% Air Pollution from plants
generating Electricity;
* Fugitive Source: Construction sites, Exposed Areas
* Area Sources: Dense urban community agricultural area

*Cont.
oNatural Sources:
Volcanoes and Hot springs
Increase ozone due to thunderstorms, fires.
oMobile Sources:
Those that move while polluting e.g. Trucks,
Cars, Busses Etc. 60% of Air Pollution from
motor vehicles, 80-88% in major cities.

*Types of Pollutants
o
Primary Pollutant
Pollutants
that are
emitted directly from
identifiable
sourcesproduced
by
both
natural
events
or
human activities e.g.
Dust Storms, Emission
from Vehicles

oSecondary
Pollutants

When certain
chemical reactions
take place among the
primary pollutants
e.g. Sulfuric Acid

* Air Pollution can overload or breakdown the natural

defenses such as hair in our nose, sticky mucus in the

lining of the upper respiratory tract causing diseases
like lung cancer, asthma, chronic bronchitis etc.
* Cigarette smoking is responsible for the greatest
exposure to carbon monoxide exposure to air
containing even 0.001% of carbon monoxide for
several hours can cause collapse, coma and even
death
* CO is attatched to blood hemoglobin reduces the
oxygen carrying capacity of blood.

*Effects of Air

Pollution

* Building Materails
* Cigarette Smoking
* Pestecides
* Volatile organics from paints, furniture, rugs

*Indoor Air Pollutants

* Cigarette Smoking
* Formaldehyde
* Radioactive Radon 222 Gas
* Asbetos

*Most Dangerous

Pollutants

* People which are respiratory ailments are

affected
* Asbetos Inhalation may cause Lung Cancer
* Asbetos Workers, Insulators pipe fitters and
Shipyard employees

How Serious is the Problem

Indoor Air Pollution

* Irritation of Mucus Membrane

* Coughing
* Dizziness
* Nausea
* Death

of Indoor Air Pollution
