Dielectical Response
The presence of water trees in extruded
insulation or moisture in laminated insulation generally
increases polarization and conduction or dielectric
losses.

current
These methods are performed offline by applying a
relatively low DC voltage to the cable system under
test for a preset duration.
The current during voltage application (charging
current) ismeasured and recorded. This current is called
the polarization current.
After the charging period the cable system is short
circuited for a few seconds to discharge the capacitive
current. The discharging current (the depolarization
current) is then measured and recorded for a preset
time under short circuit condition, usually about the
same time as the charging time with the application of a
Polarization/Depolarization
current
The measured charging current consists of the
absorption current, which decays relatively quickly after
the voltage reaches the test value; the polarization
current, which decreases more slowly with time; and the
resistive (or conduction) current, which is due to the
resistance of the insulation system.
The discharging current consists of desorption current,
which decreases relatively rapidly with time (similar to
the absorption current during charging) and
depolarization current, which decays more slowly.
