group of disorders
characterized by
› hyperglycemia and
› associated with microvascular (ie,
retinal, renal, possibly
neuropathic), macrovascular (ie,
coronary, peripheral vascular),
and neuropathic (ie, autonomic,
peripheral) complications
O the most common form of diabetes
mellitus
O over 90-95% of these cases can be
prevented
O it remains for adults the leading cause
of related complications such as
blindness, non-traumatic amputations
and chronic kidney failure requiring
dialysis.
O usually starts in people over age 40
who are overweight
O can occur in people who are not
overweight
O Sometimes referred to as "ADULT-
ONSET DIABETES³
O has started to appear in children
because of the rise in obesity in
young people
O is slightly more common in older
women than men.
