KEY CONCEPTS

Modern Art
Museum,Fortworth.

CRITICAL REGIONALISM
The stylings of critical regionalism seek to provide an architecture rooted
in the modern tradition, but tied to geographical and cultural context.
Critical regionalism is not simply regionalism in the sense of vernacular
architecture.
It is a progressive approach to design that seeks to mediate between the
global and the local languages of architecture.
Ando being a Japanese was strongly influenced by their religion(Zen
style) and traditional architecture hence practiced typical regionalism.

SIMPLICITY:
As an architect, he believes that architecture can change
society, that "to change the dwelling is to change the city
and to reform society" GEOMETRY
SOUL TO CONCRETE:
Ando's architecture is mostly constructed with concrete,
providing a sense of cleanliness and weightlessness (even
though concrete is a heavy material) at the same time. Due to
the simplicity of the exterior, construction, and organization
of the space are relatively potential in order to represent the
aesthetic of sensation.
ESSENCE OF NATURE:
known for the creative use of natural light and for structures
that follow natural forms of the landscape, rather than
disturbing the landscape by making it conform to the
constructed space of a building.

"Instead of simply pursuing superficial comforts,I want to reexamine what has been discarded in the process of economic
growth and to seek after only those things that are essential to
human dwelling."
"I wanted to give concrete, not the coarseness associated with
the material in Le Corbusier's works, but a more refined
expression."
"I want to realise my vision of architecture by selecting what is
in harmony with life today - in other words, something like the
essence of space - from among such things."

(CRGS) is a 6 storey building with height of 5.4 metres between
each level. This void exposes the underside of the building,
creating the appearance of a twisted structure, and creates a
large sheltered entrance for staff, students and visitors below.

This bulky concrete

school of art, design
and architecture
consisting of Housing
studios and teaching
rooms for over 300
students was designed
by Tadao Ando as a
six-storey concrete
block with a huge
triangular void at its
centre.

GEOGRAPHICAL SETTING:
MEXICO - MOUNTAINOUS AND ROCKY
NOT COMPLETELY URBANIZED

Additional openings elsewhere

around the building provide outdoor

as an open-air amphitheatre.

building has a modulation of supports

side, having 3 modules in the short side and 11

SHOULD REMAIN SILENT AND LET NATURE IN THE GUISE OF SUNLIGHT

MATERIALS:
The finishes of the building are:

Granite floors or concrete polishing, epoxy-coated

Apparent concrete walls, plaster, drywall or resin panel

Ceiling drywall or prefabricated resin panel

Windows: Aluminium and Insulated glass in areas with direct
exposure to sun-rays.

STRUCTURE:
The building has a modulation of
supports (columns) arranged in a grid of
9 metres per side, having 3 modules in
the short side and 11 in the long one.
The main support structure is based on
4 frames in the long direction, spaced 9
metres one from another, and
describing free spaces of about 80 to 65
metres. The main frames are stabilised
trough a secondary structure which
allows it to have the required stiffness
to be structurally stable.
