THE AGONY

AND GLORY
OF THE CROSS
Lesson 2

The GARDEN OF
GETHSEMANE
1. Like Paul, let us only boast
in the CROSS of Jesus
But far be it from me to boast
except in the cross of our Lord
Jesus Christ, by which the world
has been crucified to me, and I to
the world. (Galatians 6:14)

2. The word, Gethsemane

means oil press for
preparing the olive oil
3. This garden was the prayer
place of Jesus. He often
went
there (John 18:1, 2)
4. Judas would come! Jesus had
said that it would be better for
Judas NOT to have been born
(Matthew 26:24, 25)

IT IS NOW PRAYER TIME FOR

JESUS! HIS HOUR HAS COME!
(Mark 10:38, 39)
1. The weight of the sins of the
world are upon Him
2. He had already instituted the
Lords Supper in memory of
His
body and blood (Matthew 26)
3. He had prophesied that His
betrayal was NEAR!

4. IN THE HOURS AHEAD:

Peter will DENY that he knows
HIM!
Only one of the 12, JOHN, will
even be at the CROSS!
Jesus will be rejected in favor of a
criminal, BARABBAS!

5. JESUS PRAYED at important

periods in His ministry
He was praying at His BAPTISM!
(Luke 3:21, 22)
He prayed ALL NIGHT before
selecting the 12 (Luke 6:12-16)
He was praying at the time of His
TRANSFIGURATION
(Luke 9:28-35)

6. In the Garden, when Jesus

prayed that His cup of suffering
might not come, GOD
SAID
NO!
And going a little farther he fell on
his face and prayed, saying, "My
Father, if it be possible, let this cup
pass from me; nevertheless, not as
I will, but as you will."
(Matthew 26:39)

And being in an agony he prayed

more earnestly; and his sweat
became like great drops of blood
falling down to the ground.
(Luke 22:44)
If God had REMOVED Jesus cup
of suffering, YOU AND I WOULD BE
LOST ETERNALLY!

THERE IS NO WAY
FOR US TO BE SAVED
EXCEPT
THROUGH THE CROSS!
JESUS DID IT FOR US!

NOTE:
On the CROSS, Jesus said,
IT IS FINISHED!
But, the DECISION was
already made in
GETHSEMANE!

7. PAIN TIME was coming!

An ANGEL came, strengthening
Him! (Luke 22:43)
.looking to Jesus, the founder
and perfecter of our faith, who for
the joy that was set before him
endured the cross, despising the
shame, and is seated at the right
hand of the throne of God.
(Hebrews 12:2)

8. NOTE: The gospel accounts

do NOT emphasize the
suffering of Jesus
9. BETRAYAL TIME! A mob of
men came to arrest an unarmed
preacher
but Jesus said to him, "Judas,
would you betray the Son of Man
with a kiss?
(Luke 22:48)

Then Jesus, knowing all that

would happen to him, came
forward and said to them, "Whom
do you seek?"
They answered him, "Jesus of
Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I
am he." Judas, who betrayed
him, was standing with them.
(John 18:4, 5)

When Jesus said to them, "I

am
he," they drew back and fell
to the ground.
So he asked them again, "Whom

do you seek?" And they

said, "Jesus of Nazareth.
(John 18:6, 7)

Then Simon Peter, having a

sword, drew it and struck the high
priest's servant and cut off his
right ear. (The servant's name was
Malchus.)
So Jesus said to Peter, "Put your
sword into its sheath; shall I not
drink the cup that the Father has
given me?"
(John 18:10, 11)

ANOTHER ACCOUNT:
And one of them struck the
servant of the high priest and cut
off his right ear.
But Jesus said, "No more of
this!" And he touched his ear and
healed him.
(Luke 22:50, 51)

Then Jesus said to the chief

priests and officers of the temple
and elders, who had come out
against him, "Have you come out
as against a robber, with swords
and clubs?
When I was with you day after day
in the temple, you did not lay
hands on me. (Luke 22:52, 53)

THE TRIALS OF JESUS

(Matthew 26, 27; Mark14, 15; Luke
22, 23; John 18, 19)
1. In the trials, many testified
against Jesus, but it was not
consistent
For many bore false witness
against him, but their testimony did
not agree.
(Mark 14:56)

2. The trials were UNFAIR from

the beginning
3. Four puppet rulers JUDGED
the Great Judge of the world
ANNAS, CAIAPHAS, HEROD,
PILATE
4. The respected Sanhedrin,
Jewish court, became a lynch
mob

CONSIDER:
THE ONLY ONE WHO WAS IN
CONTROL IN THESE TRIALS
WAS:
JESUS!
Jesus fought SATAN, JUDAISM,
and the WORLD, AND:
HE WON!
(Continued)

For this reason the Father loves

me, because I lay down my life that
I may take it up again.
No one takes it from me, but I lay
it down of my own accord. I have
authority to lay it down, and I have
authority to take it up again. This
charge I have received from my
Father. (John 10:17, 18)

5. The JEWISH LEADERS were so

corrupt.
6. Also, they were AFRAID of
Jesus. They feared a RIOT if the
took Him during the Passover
But they said, "Not during the
feast, lest there be an uproar among
the people. (Matthew 26:5)

ILLEGAL AND IRREGULAR

ACTIONS DURING THE TRIALS
1. The decision was made before
the trial began
2. No authority to arrest at night
3. Capital trials and verdict could
NOT be done at night
4. Judges were to defend as well
as accuse

5. Crucifixion was NOT known in

Jewish Law
6. Hearsay evidence was not to
be given under Jewish Law
7. False witnesses were sought
(Matthew 26:59-61)
8. The Sanhedrin had no authority
to originate the charges

9. The accused person could

NOT testify against Himself
10. Court cases were not held on
feast days

and Glory of the Cross for

THE JEWISH TRIAL

1. Jesus was taken first to ANNAS,
the former High Priest (John
18:13)
2. Then, before CAIAPHAS, the
High Pries, son-in-law of Annas
(John 18:24, 29-33, etc.)

3. Like barbarians they SPAT on

Jesus, SLAPPED Him, CURSED
Him, etc. (Matthew 26:66-68,
etc.)
Jesus had prophesied SPIT!
(Mark 10:34)
4. Jesus was forced to testify
against Himself under oath
(Matthew 26:62-64)

THE ROMAN TRIALS

1. Pilate hated the Jews. They
hated him. He wanted to
protect his political fortune
2. The Jews CHANGED the
charge from blasphemy to
political TREASON (Luke 23:13)
(Continued)

And they began to accuse

him, saying, "We found this
man misleading our nation
and forbidding us to give
tribute to Caesar, and
saying that he himself is
Christ, a king.
(Luke 23:2)

3. Pilate said, Not guilty, but

sent Jesus to HEROD (Luke
23:7-12).
Herod wanted a magic show! He
returned Jesus to PILATE!
4. The Jews thought they WON,
BUT THEY LOST!
They said they had No king but
Caesar! (John 19:15)

By saying this, the JEWS accepted

the very thing they hated --- loyalty
to Caesar!
From then on Pilate sought to
release him, but the Jews cried
out, "If you release this man, you
are not Caesar's friend. Everyone
who makes himself a king
opposes Caesar."
(John 19:12)

They CRIED OUT:

And all the people answered, "His

blood be on us and on our

children!"
(Matthew 27:25)
Later, in the war with Rome,
hundreds of thousands were killed,
and Jerusalem destroyed!

NOTE THIS VERY TRAGIC

CONTRAST
Pilate washed his hands of
the matter and allowed Jesus to be
crucified! (Matthew 27:24)
IN CONTRAST:
Jesus WASHED FEET!
(John 13)
