INDIAN IMPERIALISM

Udochi, Chris, Kevin, Jeffery,

Max, and Praesana

EIC Finding India

EIC discovered India in the early
1600s
India was at its cultural and political
peak
Its society and culture already using
a hateful cross-cultural encounter

EIC Encouraging Greed

EIC quickly expanded and gained
wealth
This encouraged greed
Indian employees got a small salary

British techniques
Military campaigns helped the British expand
their empire
Evangelical Christian missionaries wanted
wanted to force Indians to British values, laws,
manners, and institutions (Florence, 668)
These techniques were not humane because they
were by force

How the British gained

power
Came in 1681
Troops of British East India Company established
a port to conduct trade
Eventually destroyed French presence and went
on from there
Not humane because they imperialized part of
India by force.

Imperialism in India Ends

British disrespected Indian religion
Indian Mutiny, first rebellion
British no longer thought Indians
willing to accept European culture

Why did Imperialism end?

Pigs and Cows were sacred, but their
fat was used to load rifles
Middle-Class Indians were not the
same as Middle-Class Europeans
Indians realized these things, and
rage led to rebellion

Figures that Ended

Imperialism

Quote: "In areas under its control, the EIC or the governor-general himself
began to impose European social and cultural norms, which generated a
great deal of anger among many Indian political, religious, and community
leaders.

In places that were under the East India Company's(EIC) power, had their
religion, culture, and language replaced with European religion, culture,
and language.
The EIC took over India
They took away religion, culture, and language, and replaced it with British
customs
Indian leaders were greatly against this

Figures that Ended Imperialism Part

2

Quote:" On August 1, 1858, the India Bill transferred all possessions,

rights, and duties of the EIC to Queen Victoria (r. 1837- 1910...Thus began
a new era of government sponsored colonial control.
The India Bill and all possessions, rights, and duties were given to Queen
Victoria, starting a new era.
The Indian bill was transferred
Once Queen Victoria took over all the duties of the EIC
Queen Victoria taking over started a new era
