HEAT TRANSFER

ENHANCEMENT
BY CORRUGATED TUBES

PREPARED BY:
KANSAGARA RAVIKUMAR SANJAYBHAI
GUIDED BY:
MRS. MANJEET MUKHI

WHY HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT IS REQUIRED ?

Economy
Limited Stock of Fuels
Environment
Development

HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT TECHNIQUES:

1. Active method: Involves some external power input.
2. Passive method: No need any external power input
3. Compound method: Using both active and passive methods.
Active methods:

Passive method:

Surface vibration
Fluid vibration
Injection
Electrostatic elds
Mechanical equipment
Induced pulsation

Additives for liquids

Additives for gases
Swirl-ow devices
Treated surfaces
Rough surfaces
Extended surfaces

TYPES OF CORRUGATED TUBES:

According to concave/convex[2]:

According to corrugated pattern[1]:

Inward concave

Soft

Hard

Dimpled

Outward convex

spirally corrugated tube (2015), 1-8.

HOW TO ENHANCE HEAT TRANSFER IN CORRUGATED

TUBES ?

Due to disturbance in laminar sub layer.

Due to disturbance in thermal boundary layer.
Reduction in fouling potential.
Spirally corrugated tubes imparts different flow regimes :
1. Spiral in the core
2. Eddy's at the periphery

EFFECT OF PITCH & CORRUGATED HEIGHT ON

HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICENT:

Corrugated height constant

Pitch constant

Huai-Zhi Han, Bing-Xi Li, Feng-Chen Li, Yu-Rong He, RST model for turbulent flow and heat transfer mechanism in an outward convex
corrugated tube (2013), 107-129.

ADVANTAGES:

Compact in size.
Very low maintenance costs.
Lower heat transfer areas.
Less fouling.
High response to CIP.
Wide choice of MOC.
No obstruction to the flow area of the tube.

DISADVANTAGES:
Roughness of the tubes is increases.
Pressure drop is increases.
A corrugated tube is less effective for Re < 600.
