Indigenous musical instruments are


classified according to Hornsbel Sachs
system namely:

Idiophones

Membranophones

Chordophones

Aerophones

Idiophones
- are instruments that produce
sound primarily by vibrating the
instrument itself, e.g. shaking, striking,
and rubbing.

Membranophones
- are instruments that produce
sound through vibrating a stretched
membrane of an animal skin. These are
played by rubbing or tapping.

Chordophones
- are instruments that make sound
through vibrating strings which are
plucked, bowed, or strummed to produce
sound.

Aerophones
- are instruments that cause body of
air to vibrate. These are also called wind
instruments.

IDEOPHONES

Gangsa
- is a single handheld smooth
surfaced gong with
a narrow rim.

Tongatong
- is a bamboo
percussion
instrument used by
the people of
Kalinga. It is made
of bamboo cut in
various lengths.

Palipal
- is also called
bamboo clapper
from Ifugao. It is
played by shaking;
one half swings up
and down and in
the down swing
hits up and down.

MEMBRANOPHONES

Sulibao
-Is a conical
tenor drum which
originated either
from Ifugaos or
Ibalois. It is played
by means of
tapping with hands
or with a padded
stick.

Ludag
- is the drum of the
Apayos. It is a
double headed
drum and can be
beaten by the
palm.

Bilbil/Bunkaka
- is a bamboo
musical instrument
used by the
Tingians which is
played by means of
striking the split
end against the
palm.

CHORDOPHONES

Pas-ing
- is a chordophone
of Igorots. It is a
two-plucked
instrument.

Litgit
- is a bamboo
violin which is
played by means
of rubbing to
produce friction.

Butting
- is a bamboo
tied with banana
fibers which served
as strings. It is also
the same with
Gurimbao of the
Negritos.

AEROPHONES

Padlong
- is an open
bamboo pipe that
has three finger
holes and a
mouthpiece.

Kaleleng/Baliing
- is a nose flute
that is played
through the nostril
while the other end
is being

Diwdiwas
- is made up of
slender bamboo
pipes of differing
length. It is also
called panpipe. It is
played by moving
the mouth through
the holes while
blowing it at the
same time.
