1. INTRODUCTION
SYSTEM OVERVIEW

LIM 2

LIM 1

The purpose of the propulsion

system is to convert the wayside
power into train movement. The
movement is in response to
signals supplied by the train
control system and takes the
form of acceleration (motoring)
and deceleration (braking)

The Basic Train Unit (BTU) consists propulsion system itself. Propulsion
system, essentially the same on all cars, consists of two power conversion Units
(PCU), two truckmounted LIMs, the associated train controls, and the
interfaces with the other subsystems. A reaction rail, installed on the guideway
between the running rails, reacts with the LIM to complete the motor circuit

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Service Disruptions!
Figure 2.1: The Newspaper cuttings
regarding on service disruptions on
11th Dec 2013

2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
Lim Failure

LIM fan alarm was detected at Health

Monitor Unit (HMU) by control center.
Train will be depart and Light
Maintenance Team will take out the
LIM which is weight of 694kg. As
result, this problem LIM will send to
Heavy Maintenance Team to
troubleshoot and repair the LIM. LIM
as mention is forced-air cooled by two
cooling fans. The two cooling fan inboard and out-board operate in
parallel, drawing unfiltered above the
LIM and exhausting it download over
the LIM coils.

Figure 2.2

Hence, to detect several problems with

RTD and faulty fan, the tester is
needed in order to fulfill their
requirement in troubleshooting job with
smoothly, nicely and efficiency

The LM35
temperature
sensor and red
led are powered
with 5V from the
Arduino board
used the wellknown BD139
transistor and a
9V battery to
provide power to
the fan and
transistor
used an LCD
shield to display
the current
temperature and
speed of the fan
