‡ Typical features of a thriller are:

-A dark eerie setting also in a secluded area
-The identity of the villain is known to the audience from the start
-The use of psychological horror to scare the audience
-Victims are all killed in the same way throughout the film e.g. victims all
killed by use of knife
‡ Our film Uninvited Visitor conforms to the conventions of thrillers as we
have kept these points in mind when developing our film. By doing this
the audience can easily recognise the genre of the film, while still being
unique and able to keep the audience surprised.
‡ The was portrayed as male as stereotypically men are seen as powerful
and dominant in society. This is paralleled with the villain in our film who
also has power over his victims.
‡ We developed Claude Levi Strauss¶ theory by using binary opposition to
show the contrast of good vs. evil between the victims and the villain as
well as between their genders.

‡Two social groups are represented in our film

The villain was played by a female but by
dressing her up in a big hooded jacket, black
trousers and making her walk in a certain way we
were able to portray her as a male villain.
To also help the portrayal of a villain we used the
dress style represented of µhoodies¶ who are often
associated with gangs and of troubled youths who
often result to Criminal activities such as
vandalism and GBH.
To reinforce the image of the villain we used point
of view shots in conjunction with the night vision
on the camera. This helps create tension as it
shows the villain intensions toward his victims
and also gives a feel of a predator stalking it¶s
prey.
The victims in our film are two teenage
girls dressed in modern urban clothes
to represent their youth and liveliness.
They are shown engaging in a
conversation completely oblivious to
the danger they are in. By showing
them carefree and not worried even
though their environment is dark and
eerie their naivety is highlighted. As
teenagers are usually represented as
being carefree, fearless and feel
invincible to the dangers of the world

‡ There are many different media institutes that cater to various

genres some examples are Warner Bros, Paramount and 20th
century Fox
‡ After carrying out a lot of in depth research on these media
institution I have decided that Warner Bros would be an excellent
choice to help distribute our film.
‡ Warner Bros has been producing films for over 80 years some of the
most recognisable being; The matrix trilogy, Harry Potter series,
Dark knight and 300

‡ Due to the content of our film we decided that to fit the guidelines set by the
BBFC our film would be a certificate 15 as we feel that at this rating we will
be able to generate the most viewers. A higher rating would limit the amount
of people able to watch. Also our film does not include much gore, violence
or swearing which would warrant a rating of 18. As it does contain some
content that younger viewers may find upsetting 15 is the lowest certification
that we could give to our film.
‡ Young adults are most likely to watch our film as it would appeal to people
who enjoy the psychological content of thrillers. It would also appeal to them
as they are able to relate to the characters in our film as they are portrayed
as normal teenagers.

‡ To attract the audience at the very beginning we used flashes of frightening

scenes giving glimpses to the audience on what to expect in the rest of the
film doing this also builds up tension.
‡ We ensured that the audience could identify with the victims as they are like
any other teenagers coming home from a night out. This would attract thrill
seekers who could place themselves in the victims shoes increasing their
fear and thereby enjoyment of the film.
‡ We followed the general applications of a psychological thriller by implying
the murder of the victims as no blood is spilt. This is done to increase
tension of the film especially when it cuts off when the villain opens the
door to the victims house. By doing this it compels the audience to want to
know more.
‡ As the main part of our film is set in an urban area it unsettles the audience
as they can relate to the victims. As they are likely to at some point fear
when walking home in the dark. So the setting consolidates on the age old
fear of the dark.

‡ Before we began constructing our film I had little knowledge of how to use a
video camera, the only filming I had done before was amateur home
footage. During construction I have learnt much more as I can now feel
confidant and skilled in using filming techniques and equipment to make
better quality and more creative footage.
‡ Editing:
After filming we had to upload our footage onto the imac this was a challenge
at first as I had only used a imac a handful of time and nevr to upload film
before. After a demonstration we realised how easy it was and now can
upload footage quickly and easily. We used the imovie software to edit our
film and garage band to create the music for it.
We are now confident in using the imac as we can now make interesting films
using effects, cropping clips and making our own music.

‡ Doing the preliminary task has
taught me the basics of filming. I
have learnt how best to plan a film
to make sure you have all the
footage you need from multiple
angles. Also the 180 degree rule
was invaluable as it helped us to
better understand how our film
would be perceived to others. The
preliminary task as well as getting
us used to the camera equipment
also got us familiar with the
technology we used so we could
edit effectively later.
Comparing our final film to our
preliminary task we can see a
clear improvement of skills. As
our final film has more camera
angles and smoother continuity
in the editing than our
preliminary task. We also took
into account the mise-en-scene
in our final film which had a
great impact on the quality of
our film, as it increased the
tension for the audience.
The preliminary task has given
us confidence in using filming
technology and equipment and
with it our final film would have
been a failure.
