An open-door policy can go a long way to
establish rapport - will make conversations
about staff performance more comfortable
Conduct pre- and post-observation meetings
in a timely manner within a week of formal
observation

Shadowed Principal during CSO Principals Meeting
Visited various booths at NCEA Expo Hall to learn
more about educational programs that we have
adopted (Rediker, Mathletics) & potential programs
(RenWeb)

What I Learned

Goals

Try not to touch money in savings account

unless absolutely necessary serves as back


up for emergencies such as roof repair
Do not make big purchases without doing
research & asking others about how the
product/program has worked for their school
Work closely and maintain good
communication with Book Keeper to discuss,
develop, & maintain campus budget
Collect tuition for the year upfront to
minimize budget gap at the end of the year

Recruit members with expertise

in different areas onto School

Model expectations for
technology use & offer/delegate
coaching when necessary
Purge
resources/items/programs
before adopting new ones

campus physical plant

How I Addressed
Competency 009:

Created signage to be posted around school


grounds to better direct visitors and touring
families around our campus
Shadow Principal in handling maintenance
personnel transition, assessing roof damage after
flooding, & taking proactive measures to
maintain a 50-year old school building

What I Learned

Goals

Having a maintenance man who collaborates

with you to take proactive and preventative


measures will save the school money in the
long-run
A new principal inherits all the issues of the
school, including structural & maintenance
issues
Invite other staff/faculty members to help
look over safety checklists each year the
more eyes, the better

Hire a maintenance manager who has

extensive knowledge & experience in


handling a range of maintenance issues
to avoid having to call upon outside
resources
Have enough funds saved up to replace
damaged/aged structures entirely, not
just patch them up
Regularly practice safety drills monthly
