HISTORY OF INDIAN ARMY DURING BRITISH RULE


The Indian National Army (INA) or Azad Hind
Fauj was not the fifth columnist of the Japanese
Army but the independent Indian army found by
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. It was an armed
force in 1942 in Southeast Asia during World War
II. The aim of the army was to liberate India from
the British occupation with Japanese assistance.

tried to disturb the harmony and peace of India,

Exercise Shakti is an ongoing series of


joint exercises between the Indian and
French armies since 2011. Exercise
Shakti is conducted to practice and
validate anti terrorist operations and drills
in snowbound and mountainous areas.
The second joint military exercise
between the two countries was held in
September 2013 with the first one being
held in India in October 2011.

Yudh Abhyas
Exercise Yudh Abhyas is part of an ongoing series of
joint exercises between the Indian and United States
Armies since 2005, The seventh edition of Yudh
Abhyas is currently underway since 5 March 2012 in
two locations under the South Western Command.
The Command Post Exercise has an engineer
brigade headquarters with its planners from both
sides, while the Field Training Exercise comprises
troops of 2nd Squadron 14th US Cavalry Regiment
from 25th Infantry Division, Hawaii, along with a
platoon of Strykers, and a similar sized Indian Army
contingent of mechanised infantry. The event is all
the more interesting as a number of key surveillance

Operation Brasstacks
Operation
Brasstacks
was
launched by the Indian Army in
November 1986 to simulate a fullscale war on the western border.
The exercise was the largest ever
conducted in India and comprised
nine infantry, three mechanised,
three armoured and one air
assault division, and included
three
independent
armoured
brigades. Amphibious assault
exercises were also conducted
with the Indian Navy.

Exercise Ashwamedha
I

Indian Army tested its network centric


warfare capabilities in the exercise
Ashwamedha. The exercise was held in
the Thar desert, in which over 300,000
troops participated. Asymmetric warfare
capability was also tested by the Indian
Army during the exercise.

Exercise Shoorveer
O

On first week of April 2012 Indian Army has


launched a massive summer exercise in the
Rajasthan desert involving over 50,000 troops
and several hundred artillery guns and
infantry combat vehicles as part of its efforts
to shore up its battle worthiness on the
western front with Pakistan. The exercise,
code-named "Shoorveer", is being conducted
by the Jaipur-based South Western
Command and will end in the first week of
May. This is the largest ever exercise
conducted by Indian army since 1947.

ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Serve the Humanity in Jammu Kashmir Flood


The Operation MEGH RAHAT'. The Indian
Army, Air Force, and the Navy, committed large
resources to the assistance mission including
over 30,000 troops ( 21,000 in Srinagar, and
9000 in Jammu), 15 engineer task forces, 84
Indian Air Force and Army Aviation Corps fixed
wing transport aircraft and helicopters, naval
commandos and rescue specialists, and Base
Hospital, four field hospitals, over 106 medical
detachments."Operation Megh Rahat", ended on
19 September 2014.

Air-to-Air missile Astra tested successfully


Astra is an active radar homing
beyond-visual-range air-to-air
missile (BVRAAM). Astra is
designed to be capable of
engaging targets at varying
range and altitudes allowing for
engagement of both short-range
targets (up to 20 km) and longrange targets (up to 80 km)
using alternative propulsion
modes.

Successful test firing of Nirbhay long-range


subsonic cruise missile
India did it finally demonstrating its
capabilities of developing long range
cruise missiles indigenously. The
homegrown surface-to-surface
subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay was
successfully test fired in October
2014. The missile maintained the
accuracy better than 10 meters
throughout its path and covered a
distance of more than 1,000 km. The
successful indigenous development of
Nirbhay cruise missile will fill a vital
gap in the war fighting capabilities of
our armed forces.
