HIS PHILOSOPHY
Design is a creative act to celebrate life in
its manifestation. It expresses the
contextual and the sacred during existence.
It absorbs , transforms , revels and
transcends its purpose. As object we feel ,
see , touch , smell , taste , its avatar .
Doshis work has consistently revolved
around notions of the interrelationship
of outdoor space , an appropriate and
honest approach to material , proper
climatic response and the observance of
hierarchy and order that have always
been present in the best modern
architecture and conspicuously absent
in poor.
SANGATH, Ahmedabad,
1979-81
INTRODUCTIO
N known of all his works
Sangath is the best
internationally. Sangath, which means moving
together through participation in Sanskrit, is a
village like enclave of distinct rectangular volumes
aligned along a north-south axis inside a lush green
compound on the outskirts of Ahmedabad.
It serves as an architecture office, research
center,school,place of contemplation, and built
model of environmental consciousness .
This cluster of rectangular units of various lengths is
arranged in four parallel ranks, with a deliberate gap
provided for an outdoor amphitheatre in their midst.
PLANNING
The central court and amphitheatre at
Sangath is used for lectures and discussions
under the green canopy that surrounds and
shades it.
A diagonal pathway, leading from the
forecourt to the main entry and reception area,
first lead left to give a perspective view of the
ensemble, a classical strategy, then returns to
the right past an outdoor amphitheatre, often
used for extempore.
It is the essence
of architecture,
regardless of
cultural
associations, and
its strength defines
Doshi best.
HUSAIN-DOSHI
GUFA
1992-95
INTRODUCTION
The Gufa , which is a collaborative effort between
Doshi and the Indian artist M.F.Husain , began as
an art gallery for the exhibition of the artists work
.
It undeniably represents an anomaly in Doshis
oeuvre , a natural and free expressionistic essay
that differs completely from the rigorous order
evident in Doshis previous work .
The references for the gufa are elemental and
primeval : the cave , the circle , the mountain ,
the breast , and historical precedents in India
itself which emerge from these universal
prototypes , the Buddhist stupa (memorial) and its
PLANNING
Originally , stupa varied in shape from the
prevalent hemisphere to pyramids and cones and
were often covered from top to bottom with small
triangular recesses for oil amps , so the whole
monument could be illuminated and appeared as
one huge radiating dome of light .
The composition of the 25-millimeter shell is a
physical with this link , handmade from
reinforcing bars and mesh buttered with cement .
BHARAT DIAMOND
BOURSE,
Mumbai,
1998
INTRODUCTION
The Bharat diamond Bourse is Doshis largest
project to date , a city within a city of
approximately 3 million square feet
,accommodating an estimated 30,000 people on
a 20 acre site .
The Bourse project is intended to bring all of
the activities of the diamond trade together in
one place.
PLANNING
DESIGN STRATEGY
The design strategy had six parts :
Distribution of functions in twelve lightningbolt-shaped low-rise bar buildings rather than a
single tower.
These rise out of a uniform field of common
facilities organized around courtyards and
shaded streets at ground level (the courtyard is
a well proven devise for climatic control in this
region ).
A fifth sustainable principle in the project is selfsufficiency. No matter how effective natural
ventilation is , air-conditioning is considered
necessary in this instance to bring the bourse up
to expected corporate standards.
The sixth and most important sustainable issue
of all : retaining or improving quality of life within
an environmentally conscious framework .
Reflective glass has been used on
various parts of the linear blocks , especially near
the corners , to assist in this dematerialization ,
with surfaces as high as 80 meters , mirroring the
blocks across the way and the courts and gardens
inbetween .

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF
MANAGEMENT ,
BANGLORE ,
1977-85
INTRODUCTION
ARCHITECT : MR.B.V. DOSHI , STEIN DOSHI &
BHALLA IN ASSOCIATION WITH M/S.
KANVINDE RAI & CHOWDHURY
CLIENT : IIM BANGLORE
TOTAL BUILT UP AREA : 54000 SQ.M
PLANNING
From the beginning Doshi thought of the IIM
Banglore as a pattern of outdoor and indoor
spaces .
It might also
be right to
speak of
light and
shade as a
texture
integral to
the
buildings
main ideas .
