What Were The Crusades? • The Crusades were a series of Holy Wars. • The Crusades were between Christians and Muslims. • There were nine Crusades • The first Crusades were known as the Principle Crusades. • The last four were known as the Minor Crusades. The First Crusade… • The First Crusade started in 1096 and it ended in 1099. • It happened when Pope Claremont was Pope. • The territory in which this war was fought over was Jerusalem. • Before the war Christian people were allowed into the holy land even though it was inhabited by Islam’s. • The Turks invaded the holy land and killed about 3,000 Christians. • The Turks were Muslim. • The Christians that weren’t killed were kept as prisoners and were treated awfuly. • Because of this, Christian’s were forced to go in battle. • Peter Hermit was a preacher of the clan of Pope Claremont saying that “God wills it” to take Jerusalem. • Peter lead a failed attempt to take Jerusalem. • Later; Franks took over the land and the Christians won. Second Crusade… • The Second Crusade started in 1147 and ended in 1149. • The cause was of the Crusade was the Fall and Massacre at Edessa. Fifth Crusade… • Fifth Crusade is known as the “Childrens Crusade” • It started in 1212 and ended in 1212. • A boy about twelve was going to lead a Crusade to the holy land. • 30,000 French children were in a Crusade, it lasted until they were hungry. • German boy did the same thing and led the people to the boats. Some were never found. • This marked the decline of the Crusades. The Minor Crusades… • The Minor Crusades lasted from 1217 to 1272 • The Minor Crusades were the “Minor Crusades” because many people weren’t as religiously into the wars. • Fifth resulted in nothing. • Eight didn’t accomplish anything • The final war had a treaty that said that the Christian was the favorite in the Last Crusade.
