LAYERS OF THE
ATMOSPHERE
1.

TROPOSPHERE
is the layer closest to the
Earths surface about 0-10
km.
Weather occurs in this layer
because it contains most of
water
vapor
the
Temperature gradually
decreases with increasing
altitude because most of the
Suns radiation is absorbed by
the Earths surface.

ATMOSPHERE
2.
STRATOSPHERE

The stratosphere which is

the layer of air that
extends to about 50 km.
from the Earths surface.
Air movement is fairly
uniform.

The mesosphere. It is

surface.
The air in this layer is
very thin and cold.
Temperature in this layer
decreases up to the boundary
that separates it from the
next layer.

ATMOSPHERE

THERMOSPHERE

It is the between 80 km.

and 110 km. above the
Earth.
The air here is
exceedingly thin, and
there is an increase in
temperature because of
the absorption of shortwave solar energy.

The exosphere, which is the
upper limit of our
atmosphere, merges into the
space about 500-800 km

BASIS OF DIVIDING THE

ATMOSPHERE

The layers of
the atmosphere
is divided
based on its
temperature
differences.
