K.E BIN QASIM POWER PLANT

Member's:
Atta Ulhayee, Mirza Humza Begg , Umer Shakeel, Ahsan Mujeeb

Introduction

The department of mechanical engineering, Dha Suffa University

organized one day Industrial visit to Bin Qasim Power Plant on 12th
October 2015

The visit was organized with the prior permission and guidance of HOD
of M.E Department Sir Shoaib Ahmad, other professors of M.E
department Sir Hamza Qazi, Sir Shehryar Atta and Mam Mona Jilani,
accompanied students for this industrial visit.

Students were well mannered and disciplined throughout the visit and
no injury or anything bad happened during the industrial visit.

Bin Qasim Power Plant

K-Electric is the only vertically-integrated power utility in
Pakistan.
Effluent outfall of Bin Qasim Power Station BQTPS is located
some 50km to the east of the city of Karachi in an unpopulated
desert area near the sea at Port Qasim.
There are 6 giant generation units, each of 210MW
Production, making the total rated production of 1260MW.

Visit Journey Details

We started traveling from Dha Suffa University to Bin Qasim Power
Plant at 8:30 on 12, October, 2015.
The Korangi road had rough patches but overall the trip was
pleasant
The way had many prominent industries

Safety Instructions For Visitors

Inherent hazards:
Presence of High Voltage electricity, fuel, lubricating oils and
chemicals.
Fire hazards accociated with spillage of oil.
Electrical fires at switch rooms and diesel standby generators.
Most soginificant hazard: Fire and Explosion due to hydrogen

Notes For Safety:

The use of mobile phones was strictly prohibited in
designated areas as particularly hydrogen manifolds.
Host will provide the appropriate PPE for safety.
Smoking prohibited across all the site except
designated areas.
If you discover fire or see any hazardous situation then
notify on Ext. 222 and leave the area.

Description of the process

The process of producing electricity used here is

based on Rankine cycle

K-Electric Bin Qasim Power Station I is a multistaged Regenerative Reheat Rankine Cycle

The combined cycle generation block consists of

two 2 Gas Turbines, 2 Heat Recovery, Steam
Generators , 1 Condensing Steam Turbine.

It can self produce 1756 MW of electricity

out of 2800-3100MW(current demand of
Karachi).
KE uses oil and gas as main source of
heat generation to boil water in the
boiler.
Sea is a source of feed water for the plant
( softened by Reverse Osmosis plant).
Steam is then used to turn turbines and
the output is ELECTRICITY

efficiency of turbine and other components of the Rankine cycle

depend upon the quality of steam and the maximum utilization
of the generated heat
Water of high purity and low conductivity is preferred for making
steam.

First it passes through RO (Reverse Osmosis) Plant

Reverse Osmosis Plant

The basic concept behind RO Process is
that the water is forced to move from
higher concentration to lower concentration
of dissolved particles (DPs)
Series of semipermeable membranes is
used to filter the dirt and dust present in
water
a high pressure pump is used before the
water enters the membrane to overcome
the waters osmotic pressure.
In this way the DPs of the water are
reduced to a negligible number.

R.O Process

The feed water is pressurized on one side of a

semi permeable membrane.

High pressure is applied to exceed the

osmotic pressure to cause reverse osmotic
flow of water.

Greater than osmotic pressure

Water molecules are forced through the semi-permeable membrane and

the contaminants are not allowed through.

Allowing pure water through while holding back a majority of

contaminants.

R.O Membranes

The majority of the commercially membranes are usually made from

cellulose acetate, polysulfonate, and polyamide.

The membrane consists of a skin about 0.25 microns and a support layer
about 100 microns.

The skin is the active barrier and primarily allows water to pass through.

Factors that affect the performance of

a Reverse Osmosis System

Incoming water pressure

Water Temperature

Type and number of total dissolved solids (TDS)

The quality of the filters and membranes used in the RO System

After visiting the plant, we had lunch at 14:30 PM. We were also given
time for prayers and there was a special place allocated for prayers.

Lunch provided was delicious and healthy

Self Learning Reflection

The students enjoyed the technical endeavor at Bin Qasim Power
Plant.
Very informative and gives good learning experience.
Had a close look on different processes.
Getting a familiar with the professional working environment.
The trip was a learning experience for the budding new
engineers of DHA Suffa University.

We are extremely thankful to Bin Qasim Power Plant authorities

who grant the permission for visiting their plant and guide the
students.

THANK YOU
