INTRODUCTION
The main aim of this project is to control the speed
of an AC Induction motor by using the Variable
Frequency and voltage control method.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the project is to implement a
simple and cost effective process to control the
speed of AC induction motors using the most
popular technique of voltage to frequency ratio (V/F)
method.

Before last few decades all process industries


were making use of DC motors because speed
control of DC motor is very easy when compared to
AC motors. But as we know that the main drawback

Different methods for speed control of


induction motors:

i. Pole Changing
ii. Variable Supply Frequency Control
iii. Variable Supply Voltage Control
iv. Variable Rotor Resistance Control
v. V/f Control
vi. Slip Recovery
vii. Vector Control

From the above mentioned methods V/f


Control is the most popular and has found
widespread use in industrial and domestic
applications
because
of
its
ease-ofimplementation. However, it has inferior
dynamic performance compared to vector
control. Thus in areas where precision is
required, V/f Control are not used.

Different methods by which speed control of


induction motors is achieved, may be grouped
under two main headings:

CONTROL FROM STATOR SIDE:


a) By changing he applied voltage.
b) By changing the applied frequency.
c) By changing the number of stator poles.
)CONTROL FROM ROTOR SIDE:
a) Rotor rheostat control.
b) By operating two motors in cascade.
c) By injecting an EMF in the rotor circuit.

a) CHANGING APPLIED VOLTAGE:


This method through the cheapest and the easiest,
and is rarely used because
i. A large change in voltage is required for a relatively
small change in speed
ii. This large change in voltage will result in a large
change in the flux density thereby seriously
disturbing the magnetic conditions of the motor
a) CHAGING THE APPLIED FREQUENCY
i. This method is also used very rarely. we have seen
that the synchronous speed of the motor is given by
Ns=120f/P from this,
The synchronous speed of the induction motor can be
changed by changing the supply frequency

THE VARIOUS ADVANTAGES OF V/F CONTROL


ARE AS FALLOWS:
i.

It provides good range of speed.

ii. It gives good running and transient performance.


iii. It has low starting current requirement.
iv. It has a wider stable operating region.
v. Voltage and frequency reach rated values at base speed.
vi. The acceleration can be controlled by controlling the rate
of change of supply frequency
