Coalbed Methane Basics

CBM is composed of mainly methane, formed during coalification
process
Coal is a source rock, seal, as
well as a reservoir rock
Gas is adsorbed on the coal
surface with little free gas
Gas is released by lowering the
pressure through dewatering

Coal sample with cleats the natural fracture system that

controls permeability
6

Gas is delivered through a fracture

network known as the cleat system

CBM projects typically have long

life > 30 years

volcanics.

Typical CBM Well

CBM is adsorbed in the micropore of
coal and trapped by pressure
Pressure is lowered by fluid production
(mainly water) for about 6-24 months
After the pressure is depleted, CBM will
be released and flow to surface

To produce high production
rate, a great number of wells are
needed.

Conclusion

CBM industry in Indonesia is quite prospect,

resources up to 453 TCF -> future energy
resources
High Risk High Return business
Still to find suitable method; completion
technology, drilling, cost effective
Conclusive production tests
New energy that needs support and incentives
from government (UU No.30/2007)
