Extended Argument/
argumentative essay
1. Exploring the Issue
both sides, why
people, academic etc
support the position,
why oppose, the pros
and the cons.
-conflicts involved.
-factual economics.
-value ethical.
-Conceptual.

2. Provide solid facts and


evidence for BOTH points and
then come to your own
conclusions.

3. Spell out basic


ideas/arguments

Expanding the arguments


-make it deeper less basic
e.g.Human rights and uniform why
is it about human rights; freedom and
independent - why is this important
(self determination, self
representation eg. dignity, social
utility etc.)
e.g. Why government in-service
training important, how does it
contribute to producing citizen of the
world. Why is it more efficientcomparing to what?

4. Defend basic premises with


arguments of your own.
-Spell out your claims, support
them with your own arguments
(with the help of data, samples,
research, statistics that can be
used as analogy etc.)

E.g. How would you persuade


other that by having students do
the in-service would enable them
to be a better global citizen
E.g. by having death penalty
serious crimes would be lowered.

5. Consider Objections
asking questions like what are
the best argument against your
claim/conclusion you are working
on?
even when you answer possible
objections, can you also think of
how the objectors would answer
your arguments against his.

Outline
1.Title - a "preview" for what your
paper is about could be two
parts, separated by a colon.
E.g.
Death Penalty: a poor mans
justice
Korean Education: life skill inside
a school system
Enforcement of Uniform:
enforcement of complacency.
Legalizing Marijuana: building a
zombie nation
(pointing to your main idea and
arguments)

topic + why it is important.
-Your thesis/position statement - a
concise idea that sums up your view
on the issue help guide your
reader through the rest of the
paper.
-Not long, proportionate to the
length of your essay.

3. Body of the argumentative


essay.
Your arguments are your outline.
If theres connection among the
arguments, link them, and link them
to your claim
Develop/defend each main
premise.

4. Detail objections
Not just the conclusion (Straw man
Vs. fairness) and meet them.
Providing the counterpoints valid
points, arguments, and evidence.
Then answer them.

5. Closing - wrap up the


argument
convince the reader that the
chosen stance is the correct one.
make sure not to introduce any
new information in the conclusion
so that you can effectively wrap
up what you've already said.
Not long proportionate.

Plagiarism:
Presenting another persons work as
ones own.
Paraphrasing, summarizing another
persons work without
acknowledgement.
Cut and paste, quotations, even a
few sentences.
FAILURE in acknowledgement.
Fair use.
A complete reference is required.
