TRANSMISSION

(Clutch,drive line,differential)
C.Anup

What is Transmission system?

The entire mechanism that transmits the
power from the engine crankshaft to the
rear wheels.

What all comes under

transmission??

Clutch-This is a mechanism, which enables the rotary motion of one

shaft to be transmitted, when desired,to a second shaft the axis of
which is coincident with the first.
Gearbox- In simple words gearbox consists of a set of gears, which
can be engaged in different combinations to get a desired torque
output.
Propeller Shaft-This is the shaft which transmits the drive from the
transmission to the worm of final drive in front engine in case of rear
drive vehicles.
Differential-A mechanism used to decrease the speed of inner
wheels and increase the speed of outer wheels while taking a turn is
called a differential.

CLUTCH

Why do we need clutch?

Clutches are useful in devices that have two

rotating shafts. In these devices, one of the
shafts is typically driven by a motor or
pulley, and the other shaft drives another
device. In a drill, for instance, one shaft is
driven by a motor and the other drives a drill
chuck. The clutch connects the two shafts
so that they can either be locked together
and spin at the same speed, or be
decoupled and spin at different speeds.
In a car, you need a clutch because the
engine spins all the time, but the car's
wheels do not. In order for a car to stop
without killing the engine, the wheels need
to be disconnected from the engine
somehow. The clutch allows us to smoothly
engage a spinning engine to a non-spinning
transmission by controlling the slippage
between them.

How a clutch functions!

When your foot is off the pedal, the

springs push the pressure plate
against the clutch disc, which in turn
presses against the flywheel. This
locks the engine to the transmission
input shaft, causing them to spin at the
same speed.
When the clutch pedal is pressed, a
cable or hydraulic piston pushes on
the release fork, which presses the
throw-out bearing against the middle of
the diaphragm spring. As the middle of
the diaphragm spring is pushed in, a
series of pins near the outside of the
spring causes the spring to pull the
pressure plate away from the clutch
disc. This releases the clutch from the
spinning engine.

Differential

PROPELLER SHAFT
This is the shaft which
transmits the drive
from the transmission
to the worm of final
drive in front engine in
case of rear drive
vehicles.
It is made up of steel,
aluminum or
composite materials

UNIVERSAL JOINTS
A universal joint is a
particular type of
connection between
two shafts, whose
axes are inclined to
each other

What is a Differential?
Its an arrangement to
ensure equal speeds of
inner and the outer
wheels of an axle while
taking turns.
This is used because
when taking a turn the
outer wheels have to
travel greater distance as
compared to inner wheels
in the same time.

Functions of a Differential
To aim the engine power at
the wheels
To act as the final gear
reduction in the vehicle,
slowing the rotational speed
of the transmission one final
time before it hits the
wheels.
To transmit the power to the
wheels while allowing them
to rotate at different speeds
(This is the one that earned
the differential its name.)
