OBJECTIVE :

The main objective of this project earthquake causing several

damages to the structures.
These damages to be reduced by using displacement based seismic
design of structures.

Bapatla Engineering College

INTRODUCTION :

The procedure termed Displacement Based Design of

Structures (DBDS), was first introduced by Priestley.
The fundamental philosophy behind DBDS is that structures
should be designed to achieve a specified performance level,
defined by strain or drift limits, under a specified level of seismic
intensity.

Literature Review :
J.P Moehle 1984 :
The displacement based approach can be used to establish
proportions and layout that will control drift demand, and to
determine structural and nonstructural details that will ensure
adequate performance.

PRIESTLEY AND KOWALSKY (2000)

It also uses displacement profiles of the structures to determine

system displacement. The method is most effective for the design
of regular structures.

FORCE BASED DESIGN :

In this method, the design procedure is carried out for the

seismic force acting on the system where stiffness, time period
and strength are the initial properties of the design.
This method usually cannot be considered as the expected
performance level and seismic risk levels are not generalized.
Since the stiffness is dependent on the strength of the elements.

DISPLACEMENT BASED DESIGN :

To prevent collapse in a major earthquake, the ductility demand on

the structural elements and the overall deformation of the structure
should be controlled.

RESPONSE SPECTRUM :

The demands of earthquake ground motion on the

capacity of buildings to resist earthquake.
There are computational advantages in using the
response spectrum method of seismic analysis for
prediction of displacements and member forces in
structural systems.
The method involves the calculation of only the
maximum values of the displacements and member
forces.

FUTURE SCOPE OF WORK :

To design frame by using the maximum displacement .

By designing of frame we can reduce the damages coming from
