or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a disease of the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Causes • The causes of AIDS are primarily the result of conditions that do not normally develop in individuals with healthy immune systems. Most of these conditions are infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that are normally controlled by the elements of the immune system that HIV damages. Causes-transmission of AIDS • Sexual transmission • Exposure to blood-borne pathogens • Perinatal transmission (The transmission of the virus from the mother to the child can occur in utero during the last weeks of pregnancy and at childbirth. In the absence of treatment, the transmission rate between a mother and her child during pregnancy, labor and delivery is 25%.) TRANSMISSION • HIV is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid, and breast milk. Symptoms Symptoms such as loss of appetite, taste changes, fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, oral thrush, anemia, bloating, and heartburn may negatively affect nutritional status because of
• Reduced food intake
• Poor nutrient absorption • Increased nutrient needs Effect • CELLS AFFECTED • The virus, entering through which ever route, acts primarily on the following cells: • Lymphoreticular system:CD4+ • T-Helper cellsMacrophages • Monocytes • B-lymphocytes EFFECTS-ON A LARGER SCALE • Pulmonary infections - Pneumocystis pneumonia • Gastrointestinal infections 1. Esophagitis is an inflammation of the lining of the lower end of the esophagus 2. chronic diarrhea effects • Neurological and psychiatric involvement 1. Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by the single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma gondii; it usually infects the brain 2. Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease, in which the gradual destruction of the myelin sheath covering the axons of nerve cells impairs the transmission of nerve impulses FURTHER EFFECTS • Tumors and malignancies • increased incidence of several cancers. • Some benign effects: • low-grade fevers and weight loss. • It also has very unpleasant side effects including diarrhea, malaise, nausea and fatigue. • A person does not die of AIDS but they die of secondary infections… As the immune system is compromised
