What is Environmental Safety?

Environmental safety is the practice of policies and
procedures that ensure that a surrounding
environment, including work areas, laboratories or
facilities, is free of dangers that could cause harm
to a person working in those areas. A safe place to
work is the key element of environmental safety.

General guidelines
The Guidelines contain the measures that are generally
considered to be achievable in new facilities by existing
technology at reasonable costs.
Application of the Guidelines to existing facilities may
involve the establishment of site-specific targets, with an
appropriate timetable for achieving them.
The applicability of the Guidelines should be tailored to the
hazards and risks established for each project on the basis
of the results of an environmental assessment in which sitespecific variables, such as host country context,
assimilative capacity of the environment, and other project
factors, are taken into account.

the environment, either by itself or
through interaction with other factors.

16

When must safety signs be

used?
Safety signs must be used whenever a
hazard or danger can not be avoided
adequately or reduced in another way.
Before installing safety signs an employer
should examine whether the hazard can be
avoided or reduced by collective
precautions (precautions that protect
everybody) or safer ways of doing the work.
