PROJECT BACKGROUND
The idea of this event emerged as a result of a series of informal meetings and
discussions since November 2015 between a group of UNITAR students (consisting
members from UMC, KMC buddies and other individuals) and Mr. Muhammad Syafiq
Borhannuddin, lecturer at the Faculty of Education & Humanities of UNITAR, on various
topics pertaining to the religion of Islam, its worldview, knowledge tradition, and its
relevance in addressing the challenges of the modern world. This event therefore seeks
to share the knowledge, insights and wisdom from the knowledge tradition of Islam to a
wider audience in UNITAR. We propose to hold three sessions this semester: Mr. Syafiq
himself in one session, who will speak on the work of the Malaysian scholar of Islam, Tan
Sri Prof. Dr. Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, specifically on his Prolegomena to the
Metaphysics of Islam, and Mr. Syafiqs PhD colleagues from UTM: Mr. Muhammad
Ikhwan Azlan, who will speak on The Oldest Known Malay Manuscript and Mr. Mohd
Hilmi Ramli who will speak on Al-Ghazzalis Revival of the Religious Sciences.
PROJECT RATIONALE
If you dont stand for something, you will fall for anything. Malcolm X
Being a Muslim, or rather more generally a good human being in a highly diverse
country which witnesses a multi-cultural, multi-religious, multi-racial society is not an
easy task. Often, it causes conflict more than calm. With the awareness on the
complexity of the environment that we are living in today, we propose this event to
offer a better understanding, answer, and act upon these apparent conflict.
This event intends to bring forward a collection of books which deem imperative to
answer the most fundamental question about life. Books by Syed Muhammad Naquibal
attas, Al-Ghazzali and Al-Nasafi sets an original outline on key questions and concepts
of many things among others, on religion, knowledge, happiness and justice. Should
this question is rightly approached; we can observe a better societys interaction with
religion, knowledge, modernity and etc. What it really does is to set a thinking
framework that arguable best learned in university level. Given that this thinking
framework is understood, the journey to a practical implementation is eased and
justified. The yield is the society that understands their tradition, but at the same time
do not fear the dynamics of world today.
This event brings a highly qualified panel who has been studying on the subject matter
intensely under qualified scholars of Islam: Muhammad Syafiq Borhannuddin, our very
own UNITAR academician, Muhammad Ikhwan Azlan, a coach for the national
mathematics Olympiad team, and Mohd Hilmi Ramli, a Shariah advisor for Deutche
Bank. We hope by organizing this event, it will attract, expose and benefit a wider
audience in UNITAR to the great significance of this kind of knowledge for their personal
and collective well-being as a Muslim in the modern world.
