Review:

What are the six critical

reading strategies?

Developing a Reading
Strategy
You will, in formal learning situations, be required to
read and critically think about a lot of information from
different sources.
It is important, therefore, that you not only learn to
read critically but also efficiently.

The first step to efficient reading is to become

selective

If you cannot read all the texts in a book, you should:

find a way of selecting the best text for you;
know what you are looking for; and

examine the context page and/or index of a

book or journal.

Once you have selected a suitable piece the

next step is to speed-read.
Speed reading
- a.k.a. skim-reading or scanning.
Once you have identified a relevant piece of text, you should:
scan the first few sentences of each paragraph
gain an overall impression of subject areas it covers.
scan-reading essentially means that you know what you are
looking for, you identify the chapters or sections most
relevant to you and ignore the rest.

What is speed reading?

It is a way of determining what the text is all about.
When you find a relevant or interesting section you will need
to slow your reading speed dramatically, allowing you to gain a
more in-depth understanding of the arguments raised. Even
when you slow your reading down it may well be necessary to
read passages several times to gain a full understanding.

Today we will learn about

another reading strategy, SQ3R.
What do you think these letters
stands for?

What is SQ3R?
It is a well-known strategy for reading.
It can be applied to a whole range of reading
purposes as it is flexible and takes into account
the need to change reading speeds.

What does SQ3R stands for?

S- Survey
Q- Question
R- Read
R- Recite
R- Review

SQ3R Will help you....

Create a study tool and strategy
Improve your reading comprehension
Take ownership of your learning
Remember what you read
Relate your learning to you past, present or future

S = SURVEY
initial stage you will be attempting to gain the general
gist of the material in question.
to look at and examine all parts.

SURVEY
Scan the piece of writing to establish its purpose and get the main ideas. Look for:
Titles and Headings Indicate the main topics and concepts being developed.
Pictures, questions, bold or italicized print emphasize important
information.
Introduction and conclusion May give the topics being covered as well as the
purpose. First and last sentences in paragraphs.
Footnotes

Why Survey???
Get the big picture
Decide the importance
Know important points

Q = QUESTION
We write questions to
give purpose and improve concentration;
aids comprehension; and
turn main headings and pictures into questions.

QUESTIONS
Look at the headings. Turn this heading into
questions
Ask yourself What do I already know about this?
Create your OWN questions about the text
If there are questions you need to answer READ
THEM

WHY QUESTIONS??
Stay focused
Give purposed
Creates interest

R = READ
Search for answers to your questions.
Make notes and highlight main ideas that
support the concept.

READ
Look for answer in the questions
Talk/discuss
Write in margins
Highlight
Reread any passages you need to clarify

WHY READ?
To gain information and learn!!
Its fun
To prepare for class discussion
To prepare for test

R = RECITE
Reciting helps to put the information into
your long-term memory. Put what you
have learned into your own words.

RECITE
Put it in your own words
Write a summary
Write notes
Create 3x5 cards
Create a flow map
Highlight

Why Recite?
Retain information
Check understanding

R = REVIEW
It is important to review the material to
understand and remember it.
will eliminate the need to cram for a test.

REVIEW
Check over notes
Re-read highlights
Immediately after reading
Weekly
Before test

Why Review??

Its so good to look back

Individual Activity
Instructions:
Each student will memorize the terms/words in the next
slide. They should apply the technique previously discussed
by the teacher. Students are allowed to create their own
technique to remember all the terms, in PROPER
SEQUENCE.
They can take down notes, draw, make a mental
visualization, or a story that correlates each terms.

WHEN TO USE SQ3R?

SQ3R is useful with many textbooks but
for which ones is it less likely to be
useful?

When should you use SQ3R?

SQ3R is an excellent technique to use with
textbooks that provide a lot of information and
require you to learn the material in depth.

Benefits of SQ3R
As a student, do you get to the end
of reading your textbook selection
and have no idea what you have
read?

As a student, you can benefit from

using SQ3R because it requires you
to activate your thinking and review
your understanding throughout your
reading.

It also dissuades you as a student

from waiting and then cramming for
tests since five steps requires you
review information and create notes
during your initial reading. Your
notes from your initial reading
become your study guides.

What are the advantages of using a

strategy like SQ3R in reading texts?

The teacher will give a short

selection to the learners. Ask them
to read the selection, and use the
SQ3R strategy.
