What is a Magnet?
A magnet is an object which can attract either
iron or steel (other magnets)
Magnets are designated with poles
Poles: extreme ends of a magnet
when a bar magnet is allowed to rotate freely, the
pole that seeks the northerly direction, is called
the north magnetic pole, the opposite the
south magnetic pole
Auroras
Electromagnetism
Why does electricity keep popping up
in the magnetism unit?
Remember how magnetism had to do
with electron spins.... And electricity
is the movement of electrons, so...
What is EMI?
A basic working definition
EMI (Electromagnetic
Interference) is broadly defined
as any unwanted electrical or
electromagnetic energy that
causes undesirable responses,
degraded performance, or failure
in electronic equipment.
For our purposes we are usually
concerned with radiated and
conducted EMI in electronic
equipment in command, control,
information and communication
systems.

Electromagnetic compatibility
(EMC)
EMCIt is the ability of the system to function as designed
without any degradation in performance due to EMI with in
the operational environment
First, EMC implies that the equipment will not generate
unacceptable interference emission levels which could cause
interference .
Second, EMC implies that the equipment can tolerate ambient
levels of interference
without degradation of performance

Conclusion
EMI is a major problem in the development of
systems.
EMC must be taken in to consideration during
the design stage.
Environmental reliability testing is used to
eliminate potential problems
There are many EMC standards used in the
regulation of products that may cause EMI.
