INSPIRATION
Amelia used to love
watching airplane
stunts shows, which
were quite popular
during the 1920s.
One day, after taking a
ten minute plane ride,
which cost $10, Amelia
knew she had to fly.
She had her first lesson
beginning on January 3,
1921, at Kinner Fields.

Aviation career
On May 15, 1923, Amelia
Earhart became the 16th
woman to be issued a
pilots license.
In 1928, she made her first
solo trip across the United
States. The flight took
twenty hours and forty
minutes.
When Amelia was 38 years
old, she challenged herself
to fly around the world. She
asked the Purdue Research
Foundation to build an allmetal , twin engine
Lockheed Electra 10E.

Amelia was regularly


writing articles for
Cosmopolitan and
publishers and also wrote
on local newspaper
columns promoting flying.
She also laid out the plans
for an organization
devoted to female flyers.

The final flight


In 1937, Earhart was
ready for a
monumental and final
challenge. She wanted
to be the first woman
to fly around the
world. On June 1st ,
Earhart and her
navigator Fred Noonan
departed from Miami
and began the 29,000
mile journey.
She was last heard of
from about 100 miles
from the tiny Pacific

Achievements
October 22, 1922 broke womens altitude record
of 14,000 feet when she rose to 18,415 feet.
Fall 1929 elected as an official for National
Aeronautic Association.
May 20-21, 1932 first woman to fly solo across
the Atlantic.
August 24-25, 1932 - first woman to fly solo
nonstop coast to coast; set womens nonstop
transcontinental speed record.
April 19-20, 1935 first person to fly solo from Los
Angeles to Mexico city.
The first person to solo from Hawaii to California,
in 1935.

Books by Earhart
o 20 Hrs., 40 Min. (1928) was a journal experiences
as the first woman passenger a transatlantic flight.
o The Fun Of It (1932) was a memoir of her flying
experience and an essay on women aviation.
o Last Flight (1937) featured the periodic journal
entries she sent back to the United States during
her world flight attempt. Compiled by her husband
GP Putnam after she disappeared over the Pacific
Sea. Many historians consider this book to be only
partially Earharts original work.
