Introduction to Smart City

The Smart City Mission was launched by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in
June 25, 2015.

Budget- $1 trillion for 5 years.

The 100 Smart Cities Mission incorporates the setting up and development of
100 Smart Cities across India by the year 2022.

The government plans to start working on 20 cities and in the next two years
it plans to begin working on 40 cities per annum.

Each selected city would get central assistance of Rs.100 crore per year for
five years.

Definition of Smart City Mission

Every person or entity gives on the impression that Rapid Urbanization is


either required or in progress or will be seen in the future.

Smart City Mission is an urban renewal program by the Government of India


with a mission to develop 100 cities all over the country making them citizen
friendly and sustainable.

The Union Ministry of Urban Development is responsible for implementing


the mission in collaboration with the state governments of respective cities.

The Times of India defines a smart city as A city that provide core infrastructure and
give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and
application of Smart solutions (The Times of India, 2015).

The Hindu defines A smart city is an urban region that is highly advanced in terms of
overall infrastructure, sustainable real estate and communication viability.

A Smart City effectively delivers public services to citizens and businesses wherever
they may be located, in an integrated and resource efficient way while enabling
innovative collaboration to improve quality of life, ensuring safety, reducing impact on
environment, growing the local and national economy. (NASSCOM, 2015)

Outlay of INR 48,000 crore.

Housing and inclusiveness.

Promoting a variety of transport options.

Applying Smart Solutions to infrastructure and services in area-based


development in order to make them better.

Each city selected will be given central assistant of INR 100 crore for 5 years.

Smart Cities Selection Process


Letter to all State Government to shortlist
potential Smart Cities according to the
number of cities distributed across States/UT.
On the response from State/UT, the list of
potential 100 Smart Cities is announced.
Each potential Smart City prepares its
proposal assisted by the consultant and the
hand-holding External Agency such as World
Bank, ADB, GEF, AFD, etc.
By stipulated data evaluation is done by the
panel of experts
Selected cities declared-Round 1 Smart Cities
Selected cities set up SPV and start
implementation of their SCP, Presentation of
tenders etc.
Other cities prepare to improve their proposal
for next round of the Challenge.

Smart Cities Market Value

According to a recently published report by Grand View Research,


the global smart cities market will hit $1.4 trillion in 2020, nearly
triple the global market size of $568 billion back in 2013.

The main factors is due to the rapidly expanding population,


speedy urbanization and industrialization.

Rapid growth is expected to occur in the smart city market, with


an estimated annualized 13.6% rise each year between 2014 and
2020.

program is using the Challenge or competition method to
selected cities for funding and using a strategy of area-based
development.

Availability of Master Plan or City Development Plan.

Three-tier governance.

Providing clearances in a timely manner.

Capacity building programme.
