Tips for using Effective Voice

during Presenting
Use

voice for maximum impact.


Vary the elements of sounds for
emphasis.
Adjust the volume.
Refine the pitch.
Alter the rhythm and tempo.
Control the timbre.

Volume and Pace


Volume controls the voice. Its a tool that can be
used to draw attention to important points or
complement specific ideas.
Volume should always be loud enough to be heard
by the listeners especially in the absence of
microphone.
Pace is the speed at which an individual speaks.
Speak slowly and with purpose. Slow down when
changing ideas.
Volume and pace should be adapted to the message.

Pause

A speech disfluency.
Includes false starts, words and sentences that
are cut off and repaired utterances, instances
of speakers correcting their own slips of the
tongue or mispronunciation.
Pauses are essentially spoken punctuation
marks that help the listener distinguish
between the different ideas that are being
expressed.
/ short pause, with longer pauses being
assigned to 2-3 slashes.

Juncture
Junctures and pauses are both stops of
speaking.
Juncture is a pause or a slight delay in the
continuous flow of speech.
Close juncture movement from sound
to sound which has no pause and delay.

When finishing one aspect of the subject
and pausing before moving on to the next.
Giving emphasis to particular subject.
As the speaker finishes his talk and ask for
questions.

Articulation

Breath control is essential for healthy and


effective speaking. It achieves the following:
Breathing from diaphragm relaxes.
It delivers emotional content.
And it improves the quality of the delivery.

Master the volume. It should be at a


reasonable level.
Establish
a
comfortable
Rate.
A
comfortable rate (or speed) of speaking is
approximately 150 words/minute.

Vary the Musical Pitch. Using the entire


vocal range through variance in pitch adds
interest and personality to the voice.
Articulate-Articulation is necessary so that
the words can be understood regardless of
the speed or forcefulness. Exercises to
improve articulation include the following:

Use of the facial muscles


Drop the jaw
Emphasizing the vowels
Emphasize consonants at the ends of your words.
