ABSTRACT

Construction of structures these days, is being carried on land

having weak or soft soil due to land problems because less
amount land is available and soil replacement is not possible
due to high economical cost.

The objective of the project is to study the behavior of fiber

reinforced soil compare with the unreinforced clayey soil.
Various test like shear strength of soil, CBR value of soil,
compressibility of unreinforced and reinforced soil to be done
with different fiber mixtures to obtain the optimum fiber
content.

INTRODUCTION
Stability of any structure depends on the properties of soil.
Where weak soil & soft soil is not possible to replace with
sandy soil, the fibre reinforced soil being used. Now a days
in geotechnical engineering the idea of inserting fibre in soft
soil to improve its soil properties has become very popular.
Using land having soft soil for construction leads to various
ground improvement techniques such as soil stabilization and
reinforcement.

INTRODUCTION

There are different improvement techniques to stabilize the

poor ground in which soil reinforcement is an effective and
reliable technique.

The concept of soil reinforcement was first developed by

Vidal

(1969).

He

demonstrated

that

reinforcement elements in a soil mass increases the shear

resistance of the soil matrix.

LITERATURE REVIEW
1) Shear Strength of Kaolinite / Fiber Soil Mixtures.

In the present study to investigate the influence of

randomly distributed fibers on highly compressible clayey
soil, series of laboratory model footing tests were
conducted. The dosages of polyester fibers having 12 mm
in size were taken as 0.25%, 0.50% and 1.00%.

Soil Reinforcement Used Polyester fibers of 12mm size

used for the present investigation were supplied by
Reliance Industries limited.

LITERATURE REVIEW

The product specifications are :

Cut length 12.1 mm

Cross - section Triangular

Diameter 30-40 m

Tensile elongation >100 %

Specific gravity 1.34 1.39

Tensile strength 400 600 N/m2

Colour Almost colourless

LITERATURE REVIEW
The sharp increase in bearing capacity was found
by adding polyester fibers in highly compressible
clayey soil.
The SBC of unreinforced clayey soil was found to
be 62.4 kN/m2.
The SBC was found 220 kN/m2 for fiber
reinforced soil
Having optimum fiber content of 0.50% and
optimum depth of fiber reinforced soil b/4.
There was slight increase in bearing capacity of
highly compressible clayey soil with increase in
size of footing.

LITERATURE REVIEW
2) Analysis of Randomly Distributed Fiber Reinforced Soil.

The percentage of Jute fiber by dry weight of soil was taken as

0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75% and 1%.

In the present investigation the lengths of fiber was taken as 30

mm, 60 mm and 90 mm and two different diameters, 1 mm and
2 mm were considered for each fiber length.

The effects of lengths and diameters of fiber on CBR value of

soil were also investigated. Tests result indicates that CBR
value of soil increases with the increase in fiber content.

LITERATURE REVIEW

LITERATURE REVIEW

The soil samples of unreinforced and reinforced soil for CBR

test were prepared as per standard procedure. The desired
amount of oven dried (100-1050C) soil was taken and mixed
thoroughly with water corresponding to its optimum moisture
content (OMC).

This is due to reason that randomly oriented discrete

inclusions incorporated into soil mass improves its load
deformation behaviour by interacting with the soil particles
mechanically through surface friction and also by interlocking.

LITERATURE REVIEW
3) Performance of Fiber Reinforced Clayey Soil.

This is attributed to the fact that for shorter fibers, the area in
contact with soil is comparatively less and hence there is a less
improvement in strength and stiffness of soil.

It was also found that preparation of identical soil samples for

CBR test beyond 1 % of fiber content is not possible and
optimum fiber content was found to be 1 % by dry weight of soil.

The CBR value of soil increases with the increase in length and
diameter of fiber.

LITERATURE REVIEW

The inclusion of randomly distributed discrete fiber

increases strength parameters of the soil as in case of
reinforced concrete construction.

For the present study soil samples of blackish colour

classified as CH according to Unified Soil Classification
System were used.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Model footing tests on the fiber reinforced soil were conducted

to investigate the pressure settlement behavior of randomly
distributed fiber reinforced soil and effect of fiber content on the
bearing capacity of the randomly distributed fiber reinforced
soil.

The SBC and SBP both increase with increase in fiber content
up to 0.50% and then it decrease with further inclusion of fibers.

The SBC and SBP are maximum at 0.50% fiber content having
25 mm depth of fiber reinforced soil (B/4).

SCOPE OF WORK

Tests on unreinforced clayey soil to conform the properties

of soil is weak or not.

After conformation of soil properties, the various types of

tests conducted.

Then mix the fiber in various proportion in soil and find

out its properties.

On the results of properties of reinforced soil, the optimum

fiber content will be obtain.
