Newtons 1st Law of Motion

Newtons 1st Law of Motion Defines Force
The Law Of Inertia
Inertia of Rest
Inertia of Motion
Inertia of Direction
Inertia and Mass, Momentum

Newtons 1st Law of

Motion
O An

Object at rest will

remain at rest unless acted
on by an unbalanced force;
An object in motion
continues in motion
with the same speed and in
the same direction unless
acted
upon
by
an
unbalanced force.
O This law is often called
The law of inertia.

Newtons 1st Law of

Motion Defines Force
O Force is an external effort in the form of a

push or a pull which changes or tends to

change the state of rest or of uniform linear
motion of an object on which it acts.

Inertia
O The tendency of undisturbed objects to stay at

rest or to keep moving with the same velocity

is called inertia.

The Law Of Inertia

O It is the objects inherent property by virtue of

which it cannot change by itself its state of

rest or of uniform motion along a straight line.
Types of Inertia:
O Inertia of Rest
O Inertia of Motion
O Inertia of Direction

Inertia of Rest
O Inertia of rest is defined as the property by

virtue of which a body continues to be at rest

unless acted by some external force to change
that condition
O Examples:
1. Fall of dust particles from a carpet or cloth
when beaten with a stick.
2. The rider of a horse falls backwards, when a
horse starts suddenly.

Inertia of Motion
O Inertia of motion is defined as the property by

virtue of which a body continues to be in

motion along a straight line and oppose any
change in its uniform motion.
O Examples:
1. Person falls forward with his face downward
while getting down from running bus or train.
2. In cricket fast bowlers running from a long
distance before throwing the ball

Inertia of Direction
O The tendency of an object to oppose any

change in its direction of motion.

O Examples:
1. Passengers experience an outward push
when the bus negotiate a curve on the road
2. Rain drops falling vertically downwards
cannot change their direction of motion and
so cannot wet us when the umbrella is up

Inertia and Mass

O Mass is that quantity that is solely dependent

upon the inertia of an object. The more inertia

that an object has, the more mass that it has. A
more massive object has a greater tendency to
resist changes in its state of motion.

Momentum
O The impact produced by an object depends both

on its mass as well as velocity. The momentum is

defined as the product of its mass and velocity
